Stolen IPM sign returned thanks to social media
Lost and found
Last week, boards from the 2017 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM) went
missing overnight. Organizers of the IPM took to Facebook trying to locate the missing signs,
explaining that there was still a purpose for the sign to serve. While the reason for the partial
sign going missing may never become public, organizers are lauding the power of social media
for helping those who misappropriated the sign realize the error of their ways. (Shawn Lou

For many of us, Facebook and the
internet and other social media are
not completely understood by us.
But we have to thank the widespread
word that was accomplished by
social media for "prompting" the
return of the "missing" International
Plowing Match sign. The sign went
missing last weekend and after the
blitz and publicity hit the news, the
culprits must have had second
thoughts and the sign magically
returned to the plowing match site.
The IPM committee had plans for
the sign and are happy the sign has
been returned.
The plowing match site is not
quite back to its original look, but
almost. The pouring rain of the
weekend may slow the completion a
bit. The large coverall building is all
that is left and it is just the steel
frame remaining Some straw bales
need to be moved, a sign, some
picnic tables and some cement
blocks and a few small jobs are to be
done and passersby would never
know a plowing match had been
held -except for the IPM signs! The
containers will soon be loaded and
moved to next year's site near
Chatham and the Ryan farm will
return to normal.
It was quite windy on Sunday
afternoon with lots of tree limbs
coming down and articles blowing
across the lawns. The hydro was out
in places but around our area we
were lucky. Our grain wagon was
blown about 40 feet into the field but
it did not upset. Steve and Marni
Knight had a big chunk of tree blow
down and as I am sure many others
had tree issues. There was lots of
rain, upwards of three inches
reported by some and less in other
areas. The rain will put off the
soybean/white bean harvest yet
again. Two weeks ago, I counted
about 45 fields of beans to be
harvested and about 35 done on my
travels. Last week, after the stretch
of good weather, there are 25 fields
to go and 55 done. There are still lots
to be done!
The town of Brussels lost a very
popular and well-known citizen this
past week with the passing of
Howard Bernard. He will be missed
by his wife Joan and his children
Gwen, MaryAnn, Dianne and Cindy
and their families. A celebration of
life service was held at Brussels
United Church with many speaking
of the attributes of Howard. He was
a well-known man for his many
years in the fuel business, a kind
man with a warm smile, a
community man for his service as
fire chief of Brussels and a loving
and dedicated family man.
Following the service, the older
Brussels fire truck led the procession
to the Brussels Legion where the
family welcomed over 250 family,
friends and fellow firefighters for a
time of fellowship. Our sympathies
are extended to the Bernard families.
We send our get -well wishes to
Jean Bridge, who is back in hospital
after being home a couple of days.
She is in Seaforth and we hope she is
back home soon.
We hope Dave Marks is feeling
better now that he is home from
hospital. He was in for a while but
came home last week.
Congratulations to Ken and Dawn
White on celebrating 60 years of
marriage on the weekend. They held
a drop-in open house on Saturday for
family and friends to stop by for a
visit. On Sunday they gathered with
the family to have family pictures
taken. Congrats to the Whites!
Our condolences are extended to
the family of Isabel Armstrong on
her passing. She will be missed by
her sons Brian, Don and Gary and
their families. She was a farmer's
wife and loved to talk about her days
on the farm in Grey Township when
I first met her. They retired to
Brussels and she enjoyed town life
as well. She will be missed by her 11
grandchildren and 15 great-
grandchildren. Our sympathies to
all.
The rain stayed away long enough
in Owen Sound on Sunday afternoon
for the intimate gathering of about
40 family and friends to witness the
outdoor wedding of Tracey
Bradshaw and John Wright. Tracey
is the daughter of Mary Bradshaw
and was raised in Brussels. She was
walked down the aisle by her three
sons, Jamie, Colin and Kyle and
John's children Joey and Nicole, and
granddaughter Brimley, attended
their father. The casual, but intimate
affair was held in the backyard and
the reception held in the beautifully -
decorated shed, where a delicious
catered meal was enjoyed. Attending
from here were sister Pat and George
Langlois and family and sister Betty
Glew and family. Congratulations to
the couple!
Returning from a week's vacation
in Dominican Republic are Don and
Pat Dalton. They enjoyed hot, humid
weather and a wedding. They
attended the wedding of Debbie
Ross, the daughter of friends Jim and
Betty Ross. It was a lovely resort
with good food, beautiful ocean
view and not overcrowded. This time
of year it is very warm and even at
night it did not cool off. The pool
was even warm — very warm but it
was wet! A very nice time was
enjoyed by all and now it is home
and back to work!
Congratulations to Fred and Heidi
McClure on the birth of a new
granddaughter on the weekend.
Proud parents of a beautiful baby
girl named Sadie Heidi are Marco
and Jennifer Van Driel. Big brother
Colton is excited to have a little
sister and about spending the
weekend at grandma and grandpa's.
Congratulations to all!
Yikes! There are only 69 days to
Christmas! The parties will soon
begin and the stores have Christmas
decorations arriving daily, right
beside the Halloween things!
A big birthday party celebration
was held on Saturday evening for the
newest 50 -year-old in town. Lisa
Glanville joined a large number of
other friends born in 1967 to party!
The party was held at her home and
had lots of interesting decorations,
fabulous food and of course, fun!
Congratulations Lisa!
It was an overcast day on Saturday
for the joyous occasion of the
wedding of Danica Zwep and Cody
Janmaat. Danica is the daughter of
George and Jane Zwep and Cody is
from the Seaforth area. The nuptials
were held Seaforth and the reception
at the Seaforth Community Centre.
The hall was beautifully decorated in
rustic decor with turquoise as the
accent colour. There was a bevy of
bridesmaids with Laura Bowers,
another young lady from the 16th, as
the maid of honour. Congratulations
to the couple who will reside at RR4,
Walton.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Cheryl Ryan, Greg
Ducharme, Kathy Huether, Stefan
Nichol, John Lowe, Lisa Glanville,
Brian Love, Jim McDonald, Dianne
Muir, Owen Taylor, Randy Fraser,
Sarah Grobbink, Jessica Kelso and
Mary Helen McLachlan. Happy
birthday to all!
