Brussels 5R's thrift shop annual meeting set for Nov. 8
A NOTE FROM BETTY

Another week into October and
the weather is quite co-operative —
splashes of sun to go with the rain
and time to get the summer "stuff'
tucked away. It's one of those jobs
At the Branch
that is hard to do when the weather is
nice, but reminders of the years past
when you waited just a bit too long,
give you the push needed to get at it.
So the flowers get brought in, the
bird bath gets tucked away and the
ornaments filed for another year.
Darn.
It seems my mind left me last
week, like it does on occasion. The
meeting for 5R's is set for Nov. 8.
Ads this week have it right, so oops
on me. 5R's is a not-for-profit
corporation, so 5R's rules say get
your membership 15 days before the
annual meeting. Pop into the store
with your $5 and you're in for life —
what a bargain! This is the 26th time
we've done this, celebrating the work
of our faithful volunteers and staff.
We all have our views of life and
each death that occurs in our midst
gives us pause to review our life in
perspective. We hear the news, we
give some thought and the
cycle/circle of life starts to roll. With
the deaths of Rob, Adam and
Howard, their lives are reviewed by
many. Each of these men made our
community a better place. Their life
work showed their care, their
determination and their talents.
Vehicles, farming and business all
were better in our spot on earth
because of Rob, Adam and Howard.
Appreciation of the past was also
common to them as they appreciated
things from the past and preserved
them for the future, be it cars or oil
cans.
Community organizations
benefitted from their membership
and family was number one. Stories
are told of events in these lives
knowing we all are better for
knowing them. So to Kathy, Kay and
Joan, through your tears, know we
too will miss their influence in our
lives.
Keeping dates straight and events
on the calendar is a big job, so as
Comrade Smith remembered by Branch
By Jo -Ann McDonald
It has been a very busy time
around the Brussels Legion Branch
this week. It started with the Cadets
meeting on Tuesday evening. They
would welcome any young person
between 12-18 to join the Corps.
Drop in any Tuesday evening around
7 p.m. and look and learn about
joining. The Corps is still collecting
pop cans as a fundraiser (or any
returnable bottle) and they can be
left at the Branch on Monday or
Tuesday nights preferrably.
Wednesday evening there were 13
Comrades attending the Legion
service at Riverside Funeral Home
for Comrade Adam Smith. The
service was conducted by Padre
Sandra Cable and President Jamie
Mitchell. Attending and expressing
their condolences to the Smith
family were Comrades Mitchell,
Eric and Deb Ross, Sandra Josling
Brown, Nanci Ducharme, Judy Lee,
Mabel Glanville, Cecil Moore,
George Adams, Lisa Glanville,
Catrina Josling and Jo -Ann
McDonald.
Wednesday evening is exercise
classes at the Branch. Jess Jorritsma
is leading the group and information
on the class can be obtained from
her.

The Sunday night dance had a
great crowd on hand for the final
night that the John Heaman Band
would play at the Branch. The band
is retiring from public concerts at the
end of the year. Everyone enjoyed
the dancing and the visits with John
and Genieva during the
intermissions. They have always
been a popular band with the
dancing crowd and we wish them
the best in whatever lies ahead for
them.
The Branch had the workmen in
on Sunday to get the new speakers
and sound system set for upcoming
Remembrance Day services. We
hope everything is now complete.
The district convention was held
in Durham on Sunday with

enjoyed. PRO Chairman Jo -Ann
received second place in her
scrapbook submission for
