Local students honoured at Madill commencement
Achievers
F.E. Madill Secondary School held its annual commencement ceremony on Friday night and a
number of local students were honoured for their hard work throughout the school year. Two
of those students were Nicole Sanburn, left, winner of the Menzies, Raymond Scholarship for
Law Enforcement and Loretta Higgins, right, winner of the Garniss Family Award, given to a
Belgrave-area resident who had a positive influence on her community. (Denny Scott photos)
Commencement was held at F.E.
Madill Secondary School on Friday
and many local students brought
home many awards marking
successful academic careers at the
school.
Bianca Knop was awarded the
Bruce Power Future Innovators
Award which is presented to a
student who has achieved high
academic results, shows promise in
the areas of science, technology,
engineering or mathematics and is
proceeding to a post -secondary
program in one of those areas. She
also received the drama proficiency
award, presented to the student who
excels in the Grade 12 Drama
course.
Loretta Higgins was the recipient
of the Garniss Family Award which
is given to a resident of the Belgrave
area who has displayed good school
citizenship and contributed

The Blyth Scouts were out in full force on Saturday morning for their annual Apple Day
fundraiser. Members of the Scouting group were in the village, going door to door, selling
apples to raise money for their group, despite the rainy and cold conditions that morning.

positively to the community. She
also received proficiency awards for
advanced functions mathematics,
biology and chemistry.
Jared Van Camp received the
HAWK Theatre Award which
recognizes a graduate involved in
the school's drama program and
isn't limited to on-stage
participation.
Kasey Siertsema received the
Jacor Marketing Award for Student
Equality, which is presented to a
student who best embodies student
equality by actively preventing
bullying and promoting inclusion at
the school. Siertsema also received a
Madill Teaching Staff Award, which
is presented to graduating students
who have demonstrated high
scholastic standing and good school
citizenship and are involved in a
post -secondary pathway.
Nicole Sanburn received the
Menzies, Raymond Scholarship for
Law Enforcement which is given to
a Madill graduate immediately
entering a post -secondary program
in law enforcement. She also
received the Iyla Burchill Memorial
Riverboat Award which is presented
to a graduating student of good
academic standing from the co-
operative program who
demonstrates entrepreneurial spirit.
Sydney Michie received the
Morris Ward Graduate Award which
is presented to a graduating student
in the Morris Ward of Morris-
Turnberry that has contributed
positively to the school and
community.
Shelby Higgins received the
Sheila Prescott Award, presented to
an enthusiastic community baseball
player who attended Madill and is
proceeding to post -secondary with
the goal of becoming an elementary
school teacher.
Wes Klages received the West
Wawanosh Mutual Insurance Award,
which is presented to a graduating
student who is furthering his
education in agriculture.
Les Irvine received the Royal
Canadian Legion Branch 180
(Wingham) Award which is
presented to a student in good
academic standing that is the son or
daughter of a war veteran, member
or associate member of the Legion
or a member of the Legion Ladies
Auxiliary.
Emma Strome received the
received a Madill Student Council
Award, presented to graduating
students who have given back to the
student body through academics,
athletics or activities. Strome also
received the Wingham and District
Hospital Auxiliary Award, presented
to a graduating student with a sound
academic background, who has
volunteered throughout high school
and is entering training in a health-
related field.
Sydney Wightman received the
Michelle Andrew Memorial
Scholarship, which is presented to
the top track and field athletes who
have been accepted to a college or
university.
T.J. Moores received the R.J.
Burnside Award for engineering
which is presented to a student that
has demonstrated strong community
character throughout their
educational career and is pursuing a
future in engineering or
environmental sciences. Moores
also received the personal and
fitness activities and manufacturing
technology proficiency awards.
Shelby Armstrong received the
Pinecrest Manor Award which is
given to a graduate proceeding to
post -secondary studies in the health
sciences field with a preference for
nursing who has exhibited good
citizenship, is in good academic
standing and has volunteered in
health care.
Mitch Newson received the
Wingham Lions Club "We Serve"
Award which is presented to a
student who personifies the Lions
Club motto of 'We Serve' by
working as a student to improve
quality of life for others at the school
through community and co -
curricular activities.
Connor Bridges received the
construction proficiency award as
well as the OACETT Award
presented by the Ontario
Association of Certified
Engineering Technicians and
Technologists to an outstanding
student entering the college in
engineering or applied science
technology.
Dawson Coultes received the
manufacturing technology pro-
ficiency award. Katrina Hiusser
received the hairstyling and
aesthetics proficiency award.
