Trying to get WWt medal home
A long way from home
Pvt. Angus Duncan Kerr of Brussels served his country during World War I and was killed in
action on June 25, 1918. His British War Medal has made its way to eBay and Dave Thomson
of St. George has reached out to local politicians and Legion representatives in hopes of
getting the medal home to Brussels instead of in a private collection somewhere. Kerr's final
resting place is unknown and he is named on the Vimy War Memorial. (eBay photos)

A piece of one Brussels family's
history is up for sale and one St.
George resident wants to help make
sure it gets back in the right hands.
Dave Thomson, over the last 11
years, has made a practice of
returning war medals that find their
way to online auction sites to their
home communities and he hopes
that the late Pvt. Angus Duncan
Kerr's medal is the next that can be
brought home.
Kerr served during World War I
and was killed in action on June 25,
1918. Prior to enlisting, he lived
with his widowed mother Alexina
Buchanan Kerr in Brussels.
Currently, his British War Medal is
for sale on eBay and, at time of print,
the high bid was £15, or
approximately $27. The auction
closes on Sunday, Oct. 8.
When working in his home area,
including St. George, Brantford and
the surrounding communities,
Thomson said he can help spearhead
the initiatives, but when he finds a
medal outside his home area, he
reaches out to the local community
including politicians and local media
to try and find someone to take on
the initiative.
After a few phone calls, Thomson
connected with Huron East Deputy -
Mayor Joe Steffler and his wife Lin,
who is president of the Seaforth
Legion.
After a conversation on Sunday
night and a follow-up Monday
morning, it was left to Lin to get in
touch with representatives of the
Brussels Legion in hopes of finding
Kerr's relatives.
"We have a lot of work to do and
not much time to complete it in," Lin
said.
If the family can't be found, or if
the family wants the medal to be
displayed, Lin says the Legion's
executive, specifically current
President Jamie Mitchell, is very
interested in following up on the
medal.
While having a place to house the
medal is important, Thomson said
it's just as important for the
community to be behind the effort so
he is calling on people to reach out
to the Legion or to the Stefflers to
contribute to a fund to bring the
medal home.
He said that, typically, the
auctioned medals go for between
£25 to £50, or $40 to $100
depending on currency exchange.
While the price isn't infeasible for
an individual to own the medal,
Thomson said he prefers when a
community owns the medal.
"I call it bringing the valour
home," he said. "every time
someone stops and reads the name
associated with the medal, they
remember it. Every time someone
from the community sees it and
knows they helped, it creates a good
feeling."
Thomson would know about that
good feeling, as well, as he has
helped to bring 800 medals home
and says he feels the same way every
time a medal gets to where it's
going. He has also received a
Minister of Veterans Affairs
Commendation for this efforts.
Both Joe and Lin say that bringing
the medal home is important for the
community and for Kerr's family.
Joe said, growing up in Brussels, he
knew many Kerrs and both he and
Lin want to see the medal come back
to the community if possible.
The medal is especially important
as Kerr's final resting place is
unknown. He is remembered on the
Vimy Memorial as one of the
soldiers without a known grave.
Thomson explained that his work
in chasing down these medals began
when he was working on a memorial
plaque for Princeton, Ontario,
a nearby community to his St.
George.
While doing research for the
plaque, he stumbled on a medal and
the rest is him chasing history.
Thomson said he runs into a rare
collector or owner of a medal who
will gladly get the item back home
through him, but for the most part,
he works with local communities to
buy the medals.
"It's the world we live in," he said.
"Once in awhile, some people want
to see them get home, but for some
people, this is a business and it's
how they pay their mortgage."
The biggest impediment to the
community securing the medal,
Thomson said, could be members of
the community. He says that people
need to know that, instead of bidding
themselves, they should contact him
or the Stefflers to contribute to the
bid.
"If anyone locally bids on the
medal, they're just bidding against
me and against the people
contributing to get the medal home,"
he said.
Anyone interested in contributing
to the effort or who can help connect
them with Kerr's relatives can
contact the Stefflers at 519-527-
2389.
