PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON

Well, the world of Walton has
certainly changed in a week. The
Walton Hall is now empty and not
the busy centre it had been for three
months. The Ryan farm is returning
to an open field once again. Every
day more things disappear. A few
small tents remain, but one by one,
the big tents have started to vanish.
There are still coverall buildings
remaining and the custom-built
sheds are being dismantled.
The Hydro One employees shut
off the power Monday and over
three-quarters of the poles were
down and piled by Friday. The
grounds crew are busy working the
travelled and packed roadways in the
parking lots and even some fields
where the plowing was done are
worked ready for next year's
planting. One of the fields has even
been tile drained since the last day of
the match and they are busy working
down the runs. The module
buildings used for offices etc. are
also leaving as they are cleaned out.
Yes, it doesn't take long for things to
return to normal.
Walton was the centre of Huron
County for five days and our area
can be proud of the fantastic job
done by all.
Chris, Shelley and Bennett Smith
are enjoying the company of their
exchange student Lucas from Spain.
Lucas celebrated his 13th birthday
last week and the group travelled to
Toronto to see a Blue Jays game and
the CN tower. Lucas also enjoyed
volunteering at the Plowing Match
and asked many questions on all of
the amazing things he seen
throughout the week.
Congratulations to Hannah Uyl
and Jacob Nonkes on their marriage
on Sept. 23. The young couple were
married on their farm and held the
reception in Clinton. Hannah is the
daughter of John and Ruth Uyl and
Jacob the son of Eric and Gina
Nonkes. They have honeymooned in
Niagara Falls and now it is back to
the start of married life! Congrats to
the couple.
We send our get -well wishes and
speedy recovery wishes to Marie
McGavin, who has had knee surgery.
We hope she is soon out and about
again.
Mary Elliott, sister to Helen Craig,
has returned to Vancouver after
spending a couple of weeks here.
She helped at the International
Plowing Match (IPM) and enjoyed
seeing lots of folks.
Leona Armstrong's sister Doris
McKinley and her husband Bernie
spent the week at the IPM. They now
live in London and they too enjoyed
meeting up with many old
acquaintances. They enjoyed supper
at the Legion one evening and saw a
few more familiar faces.
Travelling around the countryside,
we have seen a few changes in the
past few months. An addition has
been added to the shed of Jason
Keeping Terry's run going
Students at Maitland River Elementary School participated in the annual Terry Fox Run last
week. Above, Ms. Earl's Grade 4C5A class shows off a banner they held during the run as well
as the threads that many of them chose to honour Terry Fox. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
Ginn recognizes county IPM staff
By Shawn Loughlin

During the first meeting of Huron
County Council after the hosting the
International Plowing Match,
Warden Jim Ginn said it was a great
success.
Ginn spoke to his fellow members
of Huron County Council and said
that what county staff achieved on a
number of fronts was really
impressive and it made him quite
proud.
He also reiterated conversations he
had with other councillors and
county staff members, saying that
during the three sunny days when
the match was open, he saw nothing
but smiles on everyone's faces.
"I never saw anything but smiles
on faces those days," Ginn said. I
think we did ourselves proud in
Huron County"
Ginn singled out Jenna Ujiye,
Rick Sickinger and Emily Morrison,
all county employees, for helping to
make the county's vision for the
match a reality.
North Huron Reeve Neil Vincent,
who is also the president of the
Huron County Plowmen's
Association, agreed, saying that the
support from the county was superb
in the face of drastically changing
circumstances due to the weather.
Furthermore, Vincent said that
from his perspective, he felt the
match would be remembered for the
hospitality shown to visitors by
Huron County residents. He said the
match may live on as "The Friendly
Match" when the history books are
written.
He said that the match, and
specifically the county and
municipal displays, did their job in
marketing Huron as a place to visit
and to come back to once again.
Councillor David Frayne, who is
the chair of the Huron County
Accessibility Committee, said that
he was impressed with the level of
accessibility at the match. He added
that Charlene O'Reilly, Julie
Sawchuk and the rest of the IPM
accessibility committee should be
proud of what they were able to
accomplish with the 2017 IPM. He
also said that he hoped the
innovations made at this year's
match would be passed on and
implemented into future IPMs.

Baan and an addition is underway at
the Bachert Meats building. Hullett-
McKillop Road has a new shed at
Schneiders', a new silo at Wilma
Farms and three-quarters of a new
roof on the log house. A couple of
foundations for new sheds are
poured and are waiting to be built.
Lots of projects going on to change
the scenery.
The other thing changing the
scenery is the many farmers hard at
the soybean harvest, white bean
harvest and the putting of silage into
the bunkers. Land is also being
worked for the planting of the winter
wheat. Manure is also being spread
to help the land and to make room
for the winter storage. Lots to be
done, lots of farm machinery on the
roads, so everyone be wary. Long
hours in the fields can make one
weary so let's all be careful.
Returning from a hunting trip to
the north are Chris and Devin Blake
and Barry Young and a few guys
from Mitchell area. They went
moose hunting at a place about an
hour north of Kapuskasing, I believe
in the Opasatika area. Unfortunately,
the moose were good at hiding and
the men came home empty-handed.
They had a good time, but were
disappointed.
The Walton Hall had its first rental
since serving as the IPM
headquarters with the Machan
family holding its yearly family
reunion. They enjoyed an afternoon
of visiting and then a pot luck meal.
They also celebrated Florence
Machan's 80th birthday.
Looking ahead and the next big
event will of course be Christmas!
Just a mere 12 weeks away and the
time will fly.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Mary Bradshaw,
Lorren Poland, Roger Tipple, Gary
Williamson. Kicking off the month
of October are Cindy Carter,
MaryAnn Grobbink, W. Doug
Mitchell, Annette McCutcheon,
Helen Craig, Gerry Rijkhoff,
Michelle Dalton, Christopher Blake,
Chantelle den Dekker, Melva Fraser
and Valerie Gratto. Happy birthday
to all.
