The Citizen, 2017-10-05, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2017. Agriculture Week follows closely on heels of IPM A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 At the Branch This is Agriculture Week for the rest of the world, for us, that's every week. There have been segments on television and the Toronto Star heralding the good produce that comes their way from Ontario farms. Again we're ahead of the pack, as our big produce party was at the Brussels Fair and the International Plowing Match, now the city folk are catching up. Their celebration is about the variety of good food, while ours is about lifestyle and history and safe food available. Either place, city or country, it's a celebration of bounty. It's Thanksgiving! The faces of the folk most invested in the IPM are getting their rest time back. The work still continues but the clean-up crew does not have the stress levels of the preparation folk, so may you have many restful days Jacklin shares story with Branch By Jo -Ann McDonald The week began at the Brussels Legion Branch with the general meeting for September being held. There were 10 members in attendance. The meeting began with a visit from Ryan Jacklin and father Dave. Ryan thanked the Branch for our financial support for him on his journey to the Canadian Legion National championships held in Brandon, Manitoba. He presented the Branch with a collage of pictures of him competing and receiving his medals. Ryan won bronze in javelin, silver in discus and gold in shot-put in Brandon. Ryan has been seriously competing for less than two years and is obviously extremely talented. He has his high school coach as well as a coach with the Port Elgin Track Club. Our thanks to Ryan and congratulations on his success and good luck for the future. The meeting continued with the usual matters to deal with and reports heard from the chairman. The IPM report on the dinners was positive with over 650 folks being fed. The food bills are paid with just the bus bill yet to be received. Jo- Ann thanked all for their help and for making it all run to smoothly. Stuff that bus! Montgomery Bus Lines sponsored a Stuff the Bus campaign at several local grocery stores including Brussels Foodland, shown above, Scrimgeour's Food Market in Blyth and Dean's Valu -Mart in Wingham. Above, Brussels resident Paul Nichol gives a donation to Jim McKee of Teeswater who has been a bus driver with Montgomery for 47 years. Comrade Andy Overholt finished chairing the meeting and conducted the closing. The Saturday afternoon euchre had 10 -and -a -half tables of players hoping to be winners. Winners were: first, tied, Bruce and Jean and Frank and Betty, 68 (they shared the first and second prize monies); third, Lillian and Mae, 65; lone hands, Judy and Edna, six and low, Alice and Jean, 47. The Sunday night dance had a great crowd of almost 90 people enjoying the music of the Tri - County band. A very enjoyable evening for all. and nights, knowing we are all thankful for your effort. Life has many passages that call for celebration. For Ralph, his wee Lindsay got married on Saturday to Craig Marks. The Morris Township farm was the only spot to get married for Lindsay and after much work by Mike, Val and the brothers, the barn and yard were shining. Barn stories were abounding by the friends and relatives and laughter followed most. Farm animals are just a part of any farm picture, so it made sense that Sherman the dog announced each arrival by waiting to be petted. The kittens were fine as long as the wood pile was available for escape and did a unified run for it, on applause. According to Lindsay and Craig, it was perfect and they looked pretty perfect as well in their happy state. Ralph has recovered from having his wee girl married. The Horticultural Society is meeting at the library next Tuesday. Jim Graham, a former Gorrie boy with lots of good tips and good gardening humour is their guest. Join the fun.
