THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2017. PAGE 11. Huron IPM barn quilt trail highlighted in new book What a legacy Tim and Donna Prior got the Huron barn quilt trail ball rolling with their barn quilt celebrating their wagyu beef farm just east of Brussels. Now, there are over 160 barn quilts all over the county that form a trail, which is detailed in a new book produced by the International Plowing Match beautification committee. The trail features barn quilts belonging to numerous locals in Blyth, Brussels, Walton and Auburn, among others. (File photo) By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Huron County's barn quilt trail, which has taken shape in the months leading up to the International Plowing Match (IPM), has now been immortalized in a book. The book, which was officially released late last month at the IPM's beautification gala, features photos and stories behind all of the barn quilts erected in Huron County leading up to the match. There are 164 quilts registered in total as part of the trail, many of which are located in The Citizen's coverage area. The barn quilt trail really began when Tim and Donna Prior of Brussels Agri -Services and The Cowboy Loft in Brussels sponsored the competition and quilts began to pop up all over the county. The Priors, with a barn quilt celebrating their home farm's wagyu beef, were among the first to raise a barn quilt at their home. Since then, another 163 barn quilts have been created and erected around Huron County, each with its own story to tell. Those stories, along with beautiful pictures of each quilt, are all included in the book, which will be available to buy at the IPM souvenir booth and then after the match. Some of the many local standouts included in the book are: • Gerald and Mary Ellen Jefferson and "The Irish Star" located north of Auburn • "Canadian Roots" at the home of Ashley Higgins between Belgrave and Brussels • "Farmer's Daughter" at the home of Melanie Pletch as a tribute to her parents Murray and Wilma Scott near Westfield • Bill and Doreen Taylor's "Taylor Faith, Hope and Love" on Nature Centre Road • The "Blyth Brook Star" at the home of Ken and Dianne Siertsema just northwest of Blyth • The "Armstrong Aerodrome" barn quilt that belongs to Jim and Leona Armstrong just east of IPM ready to begin Continued from page 10 decluttering your home at 2 p.m. Local food initiatives will be up for discussion at 10 a.m. in the Tailgate Talks Tent, followed by farming and social media at noon and the Ontario Wildlife Damage Compensation program at 2 p.m. On Friday night, the Celebration of Excellence Gala will be held at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre, with dinner to be served at 6:30 p.m. Champion plowing participants and the Ontario Queen of the Furrow will be awarded that night.
