The countdown is on and it's only
six days until the biggest agricultural
party in Huron. Over 1,400
volunteers gathered for a light
breakfast at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre on
Saturday morning — what a crowd!
Everyone was learning about the
safety issues and then about their
jobs. We will all be hoping for great
weather, great crowds and a great
time for all.
Our sympathies are extended to
Murray Dennis and family on the
passing of his brother Don Dennis of
Midland. Don is survived by his wife
Esther and children Joan, Warren
and Diane and their families. Don
was born and raised in McKillop
Township and was an electrician in
the area for many years. He moved
to Midland over 30 years ago but
tried to come back to the Walton area
for many of the special functions
Ceremonial Furrow
During the International Plowing Match's sponsorship and media day on Sept. 6, a special
ceremonial first furrow was cut through the Ryan family fields near Walton. To honour the
theme of the show, which looks to the past, present and future of agriculture, three furrows
were cut: one with a horse-drawn plow, one with a competition plow and one with a modern
roll-over plow.
held over the years. Our condolences
to the Dennis families.
Aggie TenPas and her sisters,
Clara, Martha and Ali, enjoyed a day
together last week. Sister Ali is here
for a visit from B.C. and the ladies
enjoyed a visit, then lunch and then
more visiting. This is a tradition the
four ladies have carried on for many
years. They get together every six to
eight weeks for the day and are very
close.
The whole family gathered in
Goderich to celebrate Aggie's sister,
Martha's, 80th birthday on the
weekend. The party was held in her
church and was attended by many of
the extended Van Veen family
members, including brothers Garrett
and Pete and wives, and sisters Ali,
Aggie and Clara. Many relatives and
friends were in attendance.
Congratulations to Tim Fritz on
reaching a milestone birthday on the
weekend. The big 50 hit and a big
party ensued. Happy birthday to
Tim!
The Brussels -Walton ladies slo-
pitch league held its year-end
tournament on the weekend. The A
champs for the fourth year running
were the RBI team. The B champs
were the Kittens and Cougars team.
Both teams are from Brussels.
Teams from Brussels, Walton,
Belgrave, Ethel, Monkton and
Fordwich are part of the 13 -team
league.
Congratulations to Dianne
Machan on reaching the age of the
beautiful brown envelope. Dianne
was surrounded by her family and
friends to celebrate the day. Food,
music, visiting and lots of good
times. Happy birthday to Dianne!
Congratulations to Lorraine Blake
and Rachel Huse on their marriage
on the long weekend of September.
The wedding was held at the First
United Church in St. Thomas and the
reception followed at the North
American Train Station. They
enjoyed a lovely meal and a great
time with the fall colours of plum
and burnt orange. The couple will
reside in London. Lorraine is the
daughter of Jim and Evelyn Blake.
Congratulations to the couple!
Familiar faces of Gail and Alex
Glanville are in the area. They will
be around during the plowing match.
Gerald and Joan Miller are also
FROM WALTON
familiar faces in the area. They have
been around for a few weeks and
will be here for the match as well.
The inlaw-outlaw Glanville ladies
went to Grand Bend to the Huron
County Playhouse to enjoy the
musical Beauty and The Beast.
Enjoying the day were Mabel
Glanville, Betty Glanville, Bonnie
Glanville, Marjorie Horst, Ilene
Duncan, Carlene Glanville, Gail
Glanville and Marlene Hill. The
ladies enjoyed the show and then
had a dinner at the School House
restaurant in Grand Bend. It was a
wonderful day for the ladies!
Neil McDonald is back in Ontario
and here to enjoy the plowing match,
meet up with old friends and enjoy
the smokeless air.
The Walton Raceway had a special
event with a trial race for
motorbikes. The timed trial went all
around the farm on a trail, through
the bush. They had a great turnout of
nearly 160 riders.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week were Steve Bowers, Julie
George, David Grobbink, Dianne
Machan, Andrew Kruse, Michael
Paterson, Jack Grobbink, Sarah
Humphries, Cindy Kerr, Justin
Shortreed, Tim Fritz, Katrin Godkin,

On-site water treatment and

plant will be accepting sewage

Commuter applications filed
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Huron East is applying for funding
for two projects in Seaforth under
the umbrella of the Ontario
Municipal Climate Commuter
Program.
The two projects, the extension
of Duke Street and Centennial
Drive, aim to improve cycling
infrastructure across the province.
Chief Administrative Officer Brad
Knight presented a report on the
projects and on the application at
council's Sept. 5 meeting.
The project has a number of facets
beyond the extension of the two
streets. It would include the
installation of directional signage at
the corner of County Road 12 and
Duke Street and the corner of
Highway 8 and Centennial Drive
that would indicate a designated
cycling route.
Bicycle lanes would be marked on
the existing pavement to Highway 8
on Centennial Drive and from Duke
Street to Chalk Street.
Along the extensions, the
shoulders will be widened to provide
a paved shoulder and they will be
marked as cycling routes.
Council accepted Knight's
presentation and approved the
submission of the funding
application.
Let everyone know about
our new bundle of joy!

Knight said that this type of
service is not new and the Brussels
sewage treatment plant has accepted
sewage in this capacity before, often
from the Walton TransCan event.
The anticipated sewage from the
match is expected to be 250 cubic
metres.
Knight said that waste disposal
arrangements have been made
through Ben Driscoll so that
Bluewater Recycling can collect
waste on a daily basis during the
match. All waste will be disposed at
the Walton landfill site.
The last two IPMs worked by
Bluewater Recycling, Knight said,
generated 110 and 120 tonnes of
waste respectively.
In his report to council, Knight
said that the final budgetary impact
of the IPM on the municipality and
its departments will be calculated
after the match.
