At the Branch
September has been established in
all its glory. It's a great month to be
sure. It's a time of transition as
summer has faded and the days of
autumn are preparing themselves for
days that are calmer and cooler.
Another lovely month.
For our area, September is a time
of celebration. Gardens and crops
are ready to be harvested, the young
set is gaining experience in their
newest education challenge and fall
fairs, the Thresher Reunion and the
International Plowing Match are on
the schedules. So in September we
celebrate bounty, history, people and
agriculture.
As individuals, we choose our
activities and that means certain
people become part of our life and
work. As time moves along like it
does so quickly, new things and new
people influence our lives. When we
take stock of things, we realize that
many activities and the people
involved are what our memories are
made of and that the duties involved
have shaped who we are. So
September brings out the memories
of harvest and fairs and if you're like
me, it also brings a smile.
Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have
dominated the news lately. Numbers
on television are offered endlessly,
very large numbers that boggle the
mind. There have been wind speeds
of 200 kilometres per hour or a
storm path of 650 kilometres wide or
the evacuation of six million people.
Unbelievable! Ongoing pictures of
these same things let it be known
that, yes this is really happening. A
new opportunity to remember we do
not control the world, let alone the
weather or our days. Quite humbling
I'd say.
Cadets welcome new members
By Jo -Ann McDonald
It's back to school and back to
Cadets. The Brussels Cadet Corp
met for the first time this fall and had
21 Cadets in attendance. Youth aged
12-19 are welcome to come out and
see what Cadets is all about. They
meet Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m.
and welcome new faces every week.
Come out and learn about the many
aspects of leadership, drills,
camping, sports and many other
things.
The week at the Brussels Legion
Branch was about fixing the cooler
and ordering supplies and prep work
for the upcoming meals.
A workbee on Sunday had six
ladies making pies, carrot salad and
coleslaw. Decorating outside in
plowing match colours and inside
will be done this week. Thanks to
Sandra Josling Brown, Jo -Ann
McDonald, Judy Lee,
Lisa Glanville, Joan Smith and
Daisy Wong.
Volunteers are still needed for the
meals so call the Branch to help.
All meals, even the fish fry, are by
reservation by calling the Branch.
There are no tickets for sale, as your
reservation is your ticket. Meals
Sunday to Thursday feature various
meat menus. Call today and reserve
your seat.
The Sunday night dance had a nice
crowd enjoy the music of the
Crippled Duck. A good night for all
with lots of room to dance.
Huron East prepares for IPM
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Huron East, as the host
municipality for the 100th
International Plowing Match (IPM)
next week, is in the midst of making
its final preparations ahead of the
historic event.
Chief Administrative Officer Brad
Knight presented his final pre -IPM
report to council at its Sept. 5
meeting, bringing councillors up to
speed as to just how much the
municipality has had to do to ensure
the event is a success.
Huron East has two tents at the
match. The municipality is one of
the nine lower -tier municipalities
with a display in the Huron County
Showcase tent, but it also has its own
tent to herald all that is great about
the municipality.
The municipality will also be
entering a float into the opening day
parade. The parade begins at 10 a.m.
on opening day, Sept. 19, just ahead
of opening ceremonies, which begin
at 11 a.m. that day.
Huron East has also worked to put
a number of other services in place
that are essential to any IPM
Knight told councillors that a
bylaw is now in place to appoint a
team of chief building officials on a
temporary basis. These officials will
inspect structural anchorage, the
number of exits in buildings,
washroom facilities, signage and fire
safety signage.
In addition, the public works
department will be working
extensively at the site to finish
fencing, install additional signage
and to help with traffic control.
Huron East Fire Chief Marty
Bedard has also been busy co-
ordinating the emergency services
for the site, including the fire
department, the placement of Huron
County paramedics, St. John
Ambulance, an assistance tent run
by the local Girl Guides, emergency
management and placement of OPP
officers, who will be assisting with
traffic control, as well as patrolling
the site.
Economic development is going to
be a big part of what the
municipality is doing at the IPM. In
addition to Huron East's display in
the Huron County Showcase,
economic development staff,
municipal staff, councillors and
volunteers will all be on hand to help
with the Huron East -specific tent,
which is being co-ordinated by
Economic Development Officer Jan
Hawley.
Other services that have been co-
ordinated by Huron East include
water, sewage and waste disposal for
the site.
Huron East will be making water
available from the filling station
when needed. Knight said that it is
anticipated that 70 cubic metres of
water, or two tanker loads per day,

The folks who offer us the Blyth
Thresher Reunion are having a break
after their weekend. It's a great
opportunity for people to remember
the days of the gangs coming to the
fields to get the crops off. My job
was water girl when it was our turn,
my brothers got the good jobs as I
recall. It's good to remember, but a
touch of reality tells us that that day
is past and we move on to the next
thing.
The International Plowing Match
machine was at work on Saturday
morning at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre as the
volunteers for this match were
orientated, fed and encouraged for
their volunteer jobs. This 100th
anniversary of the IPM will be well -
marked as the whole county is
involved in the celebration of
agriculture with the enthusiasm and
history of "a get 'er done". The
schedule has lots to offer, plan your
time soon. Be sure to attend the
worship service on Sept. 17 at 3 p.m.
on the grounds to get things started
right.
Enjoy the September sun.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
