Summer brings new life to village Safety first In a calm and orderly fashion students of Hullett Central Public School in Londesborough made their way off the bus and into the school Tuesday morning. While they may have been excited to return to school after the long summer, descending the bus steps one at a time was essential for safety's sake. From front to back: Reese deBoer, Corbin Hoonaard, Carlie Hakkers and Kiley Anderson. (Denny Scott photo) There is more news this week regarding real estate. After decades in the village Gordon Shobbrook has sold his home and moved to new quarters in Goderich. Folk here in the village wish him well in his new situation. No stranger to Londesborough, Shelby Radford has made Gordon's house her home. Welcome, Shelby. And, speaking of newcomers, there are new babies in the village this summer. We welcomed Brynlee Greidanus on June 8, first child for Bradley Greidanus and Jessica Duizer. Brynlee is the latest grandchild for Louis and Nancy Greidanus. Then on July 27 Shawn and Myria Reinink welcomed Melanie, also their first child. Evey Reid arrived in the family of Kody and Shalena on Aug. 3, a sister for Paisley. Evey is another grandchild for Don and Kim Reid and great- grandchild for Bob and Edna. And I understand John and Helen Lyons have welcomed another grandson. This is the third son for Mike and Stacey. Congratulations to all the families. Won't it be fun to watch these little ones grow up in our midst. Remember the expression "It takes a village to raise a child"? And it will be up to all of us to watch over the village children as they are now back in classes at Hullett Central Public School and crossing our streets. Services have resumed after a recess during July at Londesborough United Church. Sunday School classes begin next Sunday, Sept. 10. Anyone interested in helping with classes should contact Lynda Horbanuik. Londesborough United is currently conducting a food drive leading up to Thanksgiving to benefit the local food bank. Ladies are invited to come out to the church on Sept. 13 following the morning coffee hour to assist with the making of 'welcome, baby' quilts. The next meeting of the Londesborough UCW is set for Sept. 18 beginning at 7:30 p.m. FROM LONDESBORO Letter to the Editor Golding shares thresher history THE EDITOR, At this time of the year, as we approach the annual Threshers Reunion, I am reminded of the association of my late father, Senator William Henry Golding with the Bell Engine Threshing machines. After graduation from a country school he went to Berlin (now Kitchener) to apprentice as a machinist. Around 1900 he returned to Seaforth and became a machinist at Bell Engines and was appointed foreman in 1923. From 1923 to 1932 he did the final inspection of all the machines corning off the assembly line. If a machine became disabled he and another machinist went out and repaired the machine in the field. His public service started in 1911 when he was elected as a member of the Seaforth Town Council followed by terms as mayor. In 1932 he was elected as a Liberal Member for South Huron in the House Of Commons. He served in the House of Commons from 1932 until 1949 when he was called to the Senate. He passed away on Dec. 31, 1961. He was never defeated when he ran for public office and to date he was the only Senator to be appointed from Huron County. Yours truly, Major Frank A.
