Royall family visits historic Washington, D.C. church A big moment Huron Chapel Pastor Mark Royall is seen here at the same pulpit from which one of his mentors used to preach: Peter Marshall. Royall said the trip was a special one for him. May the responsibility lie heavily on their hearts, until they are ready to acknowledge their helplessness and turn to Thee. Give to them the honest, the courage, and the moral integrity to confess that they don't know what to do. Only then can they lead us as a nation beyond human wisdom to Thee, who alone hast the answer." Following the church service, I was taken down into a room called the Lincoln Parlour where they keep the pulpit Dr. Marshall spoke from. I asked if I could stand behind it. I can't tell you what it meant for me to put my hands on the same pulpit from which words of truth from the Bible were spoken to U.S. Presidents, Vice -Presidents and Senators. I have seen pictures of Dr. Marshall speaking from this very pulpit and on Sunday, for a short moment, some unknown guy from a little place in Canada got to stand there too. I will never forget it. If this wasn't enough of a thrill for me already, I need to tell you this church was also the church to President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln attended here regularly on Sundays and would even come during the week for Thursday evening services while he was President. President Lincoln liked the preacher of the New York Avenue church, Rev. Phineas Densmore Gurley, because he didn't try to preach political messages but spoke about spiritual matters, matters from God's Word which helped man. Lincoln longed for spiritual truth. He already had enough political messages, coming his way on a daily basis. Lincoln and his family became good friends with Rev. Gurley and his family. I learned from a historian in the church that when Lincoln came to the Thursday night services, he would sneak into the pastor's study unnoticed through an outside door off the street. The pastor's study was right off the platform and thus within earshot of where Gurley was preaching. Lincoln would stretch out on a couch in the study and listen to the Word of God being taught without being disturbed by other parishioners who had politics on their mind. It does my heart good to know Lincoln was sincerely hungry for the Word of God. My wife Glenda was invited to sit on the very couch where President Lincoln sat to hear these Thursday night messages. I'm heading home now newly inspired by a mentor who died before I was born and also by a U.S. fir•" At" 0211104 Alb 7- 'ineina-ke Make Your Own Beer, Wine, Coolers and Fruit Wine (Orew here or al hcmel) 84 Kingston St., GODERICH 524-2323 President who taught us that we are never too powerful or important to humble ourselves before God and His Word for us.
