Marshall had and spoke of in his
messages.
Marshall's preaching also
challenged his listeners. His words
didn't leave them untouched and
unchanged by the truth, but rather,
did exactly what the Bible says, "For
the word of God is alive and
powerful. It is sharper than the
sharpest two-edged sword, cutting
between soul and spirit, between
joint and marrow. It exposes our
innermost thoughts and desires.
(Hebrews 4:12)
And because of this, people lined
up to come and hear Peter
Marshall's preaching. They lined up
out onto the street and down the
sidewalk on Sunday mornings.
Last week I got to realize a life-
long dream by attending the New
York Avenue Presbyterian Church in
Washington, D.C. where Peter
Marshall pastored from 1937 until
1947 when he died of a heart attack.
Before and after the church service,
I struck up conversations with one of
its members named Jim. Jim was a
retired veterinarian in the Armed
Services whose tasks included
taking care of President Lyndon
Johnson's Beagles. Jim told me it
was so difficult to get a seat in the
church on Sunday mornings when
Marshall was the preacher that
people began volunteering to join
the choir in droves. This way they
would be assured of a seat during the
Sunday service.
Dr. Peter Marshall was asked to be
the chaplain to the United States
Senate in 1946 where his prayers so
gripped Senators, that they would
rush to be present for the morning
prayer they had been in the habit of
skipping in previous years. A book
of Marshall's prayers was published
by his wife after his death. The
prayers he prayed in the Senate are
still very relevant for government
today. Marshall prayed, "May Thy

I don't have a bucket list. I mean,
there are things I would like to do
before I go home, but I have never
written them down on paper.
However, these dreams have always
been penned upon my mind. Last
week I was able to realize one of
these long time dreams.
Years ago, my mother gave me a
book called, "A Man Called Peter".
It was a bestseller which was made
into a movie and nominated for an
Academy Award. It is historical
story of a Scottish man named Peter
Marshall who heard the voice of
God calling him into ministry. He
came over to America where he
worked hard digging ditches to earn
money to go to seminary so he could
become a preacher.
Peter Marshall preached Jesus and
he preached about Him in such a
way that people wanted to know
more about the Saviour.
Congregations wanted to have the
same kind of relationship and
friendship with Jesus that Peter
