Townsend, Dodds look ahead to competing at IPM
Dodds may manage to compete at
a neighbouring county's match in the
coming weeks for practice. He said it
all falls to how much work is
necessary at the International
Plowing Match.
As far as getting involved in
plowing, both Dodds and Townsend
have said that it's best to get started
young, pointing to groups like the 4-
H Sodbusters as a way to experience
it.
"It's the best thing for it,"
Townsend said. "I've been in the
group for seven years or so and it
helped me get where I am."
Worthy representation
Lucas Townsend of Blyth has been producing positive results at local and provincial plowing
matches for years now, however, there's a greater sense of pride in him after his recent
success at this year's match knowing that he'll be representing his home county at the
International Plowing Match next month in Walton. Townsend is seen above at the 2015 Huron
County Plowing Match in Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh. (Fite photo)

The Citizen
Paul Dodds and Lucas Townsend
will represent Huron County at the
International Plowing Match in
Walton later this year in the Senior
and Junior plowing competitions,
respectively.
The two managed wins earlier this
month at the Huron County Plowing
Match in South Huron and will have
both the home -field and home -crowd
advantages for the Provincial
competition coming up in
September.
Townsend said he was pretty
excited about the win, especially
since he didn't get the plow out early
this year.
While it's nice competing close to
home, Dodds said there isn't much
of a benefit to the home -field
advantage because the good
contestants are used to plowing in all
sorts of weather.
"It's not the advantage that it is in
other events," he said. "The guys I'm
competing against have plowed for
years and they all know what they
are doing. It won't make a big
difference."
Townsend agreed that competing
in his home county may not be an
advantage, but for different reasons.
"It could be an advantage for some
people, but I haven't had many
chances to practise lately," he said.
"Grandpa [George Townsend] is
trying to get the oats off, so he took
the plow off, so I haven't been able
to practise for a month or so and the
field may not feel like home"
While the home field may not play
a big advantage, the home crowd is
certainly something Dodds
welcomes.
"There will hopefully be a lot of
people out cheering the local
competitors on," he said.
Townsend agreed that the local
crowds would be big, but he didn't
know just how many people would
be there for him.
AD CENTRAL
Back again
Paul Dodds, seen above at the 2014 World Ploughing
Match in France, will again be representing Huron County
in the Senior category at the International Plowing Match.
The only change this year is that he'll have a home -field
advantage with the match being held minutes from his
Winthrop -area home in Walton. (Photo submitted)
