IPM site, surrounding communities prepare for match
Beautification
Walton's main street is looking better every day as homeowners and business owners are
beautifying their properties in preparation for the International Plowing Match in September.

The International Plowing Match
(IPM) site is progressing rapidly
with 13 tents or buildings springing
up last week. Fencing is continuing
and the site has kept workers busy
all over. The village and surrounding
area is being spruced up with more
decorating appearing all the time.
The business section of Brussels and
Seaforth both have the lime green
and orange colours appearing on
their storefronts. You can pick up
your decorating materials from the
headquarters in Walton or Brussels
Bulk and Bargain or the dollar store
in Seaforth.
Our get -well wishes go to Donna
Prior as she has suffered a health
issue. She is home, out and about
and is doing well.
Councillors recommend site for tree initiative
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Huron East Council is moving
ahead on a proposal to plant six trees
at the far reaches of the Walton ball
park to commemorate Canada's
sesquicentennial anniversary and the
100th International Plowing Match
(IPM).
The proposal had been made
several months ago and eventually
the Walton ball park emerged as a
leading site for the project. The trees
would be planted beyond the park's
outfield fence so they would be

visible by those at the park and the
trees would also overlook the Ryan
family farm, the site of the IPM next
month.
Councillor Bob Fisher, who had
initially proposed the concept, had
reservations about the Walton ball
park as the site for the trees. He said
he envisioned the site as generating a
bit more foot traffic, rather than
simply being a spectacle at the back
of a ball park.
Not many agreed, however, as
several other councillors spoke up in
favour of the Walton ball park as
being the site for the trees. Not only
is it a central location for the entire
municipality, but it's adjacent to the
IPM site, which will be something to
be remembered in Canada's 150th
year.
Councillor Kevin Wilbee, a
Walton -area native, showed strong
support for the idea, saying it's a
perfect location for the tree -planting
concept.
The municipality will plant five
trees in a semi -circle, each
representing one of the
municipality's five wards, with a
sixth tree in the centre representing
Huron East as a whole.
At a previous council meeting,
Councillor John Lowe had also
proposed that councillors
themselves pay for the trees and not
take the money out of the municipal
budget and councillors agreed.
We welcome Mary Thomas back
to Brussels and to the Huronlea
family. She has been in Goderich for
a couple of years and now is back in
Brussels.
The summer has gone by quickly
and we are in the last week of
holidays. Most young people I have
spoken to are excited about the
return to school, nervous about
going to high school or sad that
summer is over! Most bus
companies are busy with drivers'
meetings, refresher courses, new
rules and routes.
The end of August has many
celebrating birthdays including
Sarah Fraser, Brent Godkin, Sandra
Zwep, Emmitt Shortreed, Stephen
Ryan, Steve Eckert, Bryce Kruse,
Sharon Pryce, Brenda Raven,
Jocelyn Tipple, Tim Wharton, Brian
Huether, Albrecht Ringgenberg,
Rhonda Ryan and Kim Strome.
Happy birthday to all.
