Bieman named Jr. Ambassador
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
Belgrave-area student Emily
Bieman is the Brussels Agricultural
Society's Junior Ambassador for
2017.
Bieman won the honour on Aug.
12 in Brussels and the Grade 8
student is looking forward to the
year ahead.
"It was good and exciting to win,"
she said.
Bieman spoke on the importance
of 2017 in terms of marking
Canada's 150th anniversary, the
100th iteration of the International
Plowing Match and the Brussels Fall
Fair celebrating its 156th year. The
speech resulted in her being named
to the Junior Ambassador position,
which she first learned about
through outgoing Junior
Ambassador Ben Speer.
"I heard about it from Ben," she
said. "I got involved by writing an
essay and submitting it."
Bieman has been involved with the
Brussels Fall Fair for many years
through both the Belgrave-Brussels
Beef and Lucknow Sheep 4-H Clubs
and said she wanted to be more
involved in the fair.
She plans on showing for both
clubs this year, in addition to serving
in her capacity as Junior
Ambassador.
Since being named to the position,
she has attended the 90th annual
Huron County Plowing Match on
Aug. 18 in South Huron. She looks
forward to being a part of local
parades and is excited to represent
the Agricultural Society at the
Brussels Fall Fair, which will be
held at the 100th International
Plowing Match outside of Walton
Sept. 19-23.
Bieman said her previous
experiences with public speaking,
including being named Belgrave
Elementary School Fair ambassador
several years ago, helped her prepare
for this event. She said her family's
support was also paramount to
helping her win.
Steinman
Doug Steinman, Blyth's
postmaster for the last three years,
marked his last day in the village last
week.
Steinman, who started in Blyth
just over three years ago, replacing
then -retiring Faye Bolger in the
position, has taken a job in Hensall,
which is closer to his home of
Kippen.
Prior to Blyth, Steinman spent 18
years as the Kippen postmaster out
of his home/commercial property in
the village. With changing times in
Kippen, however, he went looking
for a different opportunity and
landed in Blyth.
Now, with the opportunity to work
closer to home, Steinman said he
had to take it, even if it meant
leaving a village to which he had
become attached.
"Blyth is a nice place to be," he
said. "The restaurants, the activity
and the people are all things I'm
going to miss"
Steinman said he and his
family had tried to find a home in
Blyth, but couldn't, so when the
opportunity to work in Hensall
A new era
Emily Bieman, left, was named Junior Ambassador of the
Brussels Fall Fair for 2017. Bieman, who routinely attends
the fair through her 4-H participation, is looking forward to
her time with the title. Shown with Bieman is Little
Ambassador Casey Bernard. (Denny Scott photo)
She also thanked the sponsors of
the event and members of the
Agricultural Society and
ambassador contest committee.

leaves Blyth P. Office
arose, he jumped on it.
"I enjoyed almost everything
about my time in Blyth except the
winter drive," he explained.
Steinman still lives in Kippen with
his wife Debbie, who works at the
Huron -Perth Community Legal
Clinic, and three of his four
children. Dan, his eldest, recently
moved to Charlottetown.
As far as his mark on the village,
Steinman said he didn't change
much at the local post office, but did
say he was proud of the way staff
had maintained the exterior of the
building, especially the landscaping.
Steinman's replacement has yet to
be announced.
Letter to the Editor
Vodden congratulates
Blyth 140th volunteers
THE EDITOR,
I want to congratulate all the
groups that helped the 140th
birthday committee, as together,
they made the weekend of July 28-
30 such a success.
All of our visitors spoke of the
pleasant atmosphere on the streets,
in the shops, restaurants and park.
Many enjoyed the thought -
provoking quiz. One Toronto person
very much enjoyed talking with two
wee girls at the Lions Park.
Everyone we spoke with was in
awe of the many things happening in
our village.
Sincere thanks to everyone who
gave time to let visitors and residents
enjoy our village.
Sincerely, Janis (Morritt) Vodden.
