Sports Senior softball team takes regional championship The Blyth Senior Softball team finished out their season with a big win at the 55+ Southwest Regional Games last week. Held at the Clearwater Community Centre in Sarnia on Aug. 16, the tournament saw the team, which pulls talent from across the area, face off against opponents from southwestern Ontario. The squad first faced off against Stratford and earned the local squad a 6-4 win. They then bested Kitchener 4-2, London 2 by a score of 13-4 and London 1 by a score of 5-2 for the championship to go through the tournament undefeated. The team earned their berth in the championship by winning a tournament in Stratford in June. The win allowed them to represent District 29 Huron Perth. Next year, the squad will aim for the bi-annual provincial championship. The team includes Jim Richards, Jamie Scott, Rob Shaddick, Mery Knechtel, Dave Sleightholm, Bruce Sheardown, Ken Scott, Gord Machan, Mike Horley, Cindy Holland, Gayle Beuermann, Phil Beard and Brian Stanley. (Photo submitted) Hockey hall of fame set for IPM Hockey is a significant part of the Huron County lifestyle, and five mutual insurance companies in Huron County have united to bring the Hockey Hall of Fame to the 2017 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo, in Walton this September. Brothers Ryan and Cal O'Reilly (Clinton), Dave McLlwain (Seaforth), Boyd Devereaux (Seaforth), Scott Driscoll (Seaforth) and Larry Jeffrey, 1967 Stanley Cup Champion for Toronto Maple Leafs (Zurich), are just a few of the most common hockey names born and raised in Huron County. Huron County is also home to two inductees into the Hockey Hall of Fame: Albert Charles "Babe" Seibert (Jan. 14, 1904 — Aug. 25, 1939), raised in Zurich, and Ralph "Cooney" Weiland (Nov. 5, 1904 - July 3, 1985) of Seaforth. The Huron County Mutuals Tent will be home to interactive hockey games testing speed and skill and also includes a mini stick ice rink! Additionally, representatives from the Hockey Hall of Fame will be bringing four displays and two hockey trophies for IPM attendees to admire, and hometown alumni will be there for meet and greet opportunities. "We are so excited to be displaying items from the Hockey Hall of Fame in our tent," says Sarah Bender, Mutuals Tent Co -Ordinator, "and we hope that people will drop by for a visit and play a game" This exhibit is brought to you by West Wawanosh, Hay, McKillop, Howick, and Usborne & Hibbert Mutual Insurance Companies; proud members of the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association. IPM 2017 takes place September 19 — 23, 2017, with advanced tickets being sold at every municipal office in Huron County for $15 until Labour Day weekend. Tickets will be available at the gates on the day of for $18 per person. She said that, so far, the program has exceeded her expectations. "It's really, really good," she said. "It's awesome and the play is going to be something that I haven't seen before, so it's going to be unique." She said she is proud of the show, which she has created with to Brinke, saying it tackles a lot of issues. "It will be a good show to see," she said. The play will be held in the recently -renovated Phillips Studio from Aug. 24-26 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Blyth Festival Box Office and cost $15 or $8 for students. Jacklin is currently looking forward to some time off, but figures he will keep practising until November when he can start some indoor practising, however he said he will likely "hit the weights pretty hard" in the meantime. He said his coaches, both those at the Saugeen club and at F.E. Madill Secondary School, have helped him grow both as an athlete and as a person. "Since the start, I've had coaches who helped me have a great attitude towards the sport," he said. "At Madill they taught me how to deal with other competitors and my coaches from Saugeen helped me have a positive attitude and a good attitude for winning and losing." Jacklin's coaches from the Saugeen club include Glenn Elliott, Randy Miller and Barry Bolley and his coaches at Madill include Maureen Lisle and Sandy Maclntyre. Jacklin said they have all gone above and beyond what's required of them to help him reach his goals. "My mom and I were at the practice before the match and we saw Miss Lisle, who had come down to support me and helped coach me in the discus," he said.
