It takes a village
The site for the 100th International Plowing Match continues to grow just
south of Walton with hydro poles being run, roads being created and
structures popping up on what used to be a farmer's field. Right now, most

Things are moving right along in
the preparation work at the
International Plowing Match (IPM)
site. The roads are laid out, the hydro
poles are up, and the buildings are
beginning as you read the paper.
Workers and trucks are everywhere;
a flurry of activity for sure. The IPM
committee held the quilt show and
the barn quilt show on the weekend
at the Seaforth arena. There were
165 barn quilts and those viewing
the photos could vote for the fan
favorite. The winners will be
announced at the gala being held
Aug. 31 at the Seaforth arena.
Tickets are available at the
headquarters at the Walton Hall. The
lovely handmade quilts were on
display and there were some
beautiful creations shown. There
are some very talented folks
around the countryside who
created the quilts. Beautiful!
Our sympathies are extended to
Shirley and Allan Baker and family
on the passing of Shirley's father
Harvey Clarke. He will be missed by
his wife Marg and family of Murray,
Brian, Shirley, Tracey and Paul and
their families. Our condolences to
the extended Clarke and Conley
families.
Our sympathies are extended to
the Webster family on the passing of
Dan Webster. He will be mourned by
his children Whitney and Tyler and
wife Kelly. He will be sadly missed
by sister Darlene Fischer and Don.
Dan was the son of the late Ken and
June Webster formerly of Brussels.
Our get -well wishes go to Joe
Steffler as he is in hospital at this
time. We hope he is feeling better
soon and is out and about again.
Congratulations to Joe and Lin on
celebrating their 50th wedding
anniversary.
Returning from a trip to the east
coast are Rick and Margaret
Mclnroy. They spent three nights in
PEI taking in the potato museum,
tour of Charlottetown, visiting Anne
of Green Gables, where they
actually spoke to the actress who
portrayed Anne Shirley. They went
to a toe -tapping Ceilidh in the
Women's Institute Hall in Stanley
of the structures that are in place are for the people working on site, however, in
the coming weeks, structures and tents for the event itself will begin to appear as
the event draws closer. (Denny Scott photo)
Bridge and the Stompin' Tom
Centre, that just opened July 1 at
Skinner's Pond.
Then, it was on to Nova Scotia for
three days camping just outside of
Halifax. There they took in Pier 21,
where a friend's father had boarded
his ship to go overseas in WWII.
They saw the tall ships at the
harbour front, went to the new Ross
Farm Museum, which is a working
farm with the people dressed in
clothes from the 1800s. They were
surprised that they were baking fresh
cookies in the stove and they were
given samples to eat.
They visited the Walton Pub for
lunch and mailed postcards home
from the Walton post office that has
a lighthouse on their stamp.
On their way to New Brunswick,
they stopped into the Tinsmith Shop
Museum, which was a personal
home and hardware store/tinsmith
shop in Shubenacadie for three
generations. One of their products
was a milk can with a heavy bottom
that would resist dents when tossed
off the train. They spent two nights
visiting friends near Moncton. They
went to the Hopewell Rocks and
they did a drive along the Bay of
Fundy. They went to the bottom
southwest corner of New Brunswick
to St. Andrews by -the -Sea to go to
Quilts of all kinds
A special event was held at the Seaforth and District Community Centre on Sunday focused
on the quilts that will be a part of the upcoming 100th International Plowing Match in Walton.
The event featured both hand -made, traditional quilts like those shown above, as well as barn
quilts that have shown up on structures throughout Huron County and the surrounding
communities in the past several months. (Quinn Talbot photo)
Ministers Island. There you can
drive on the ocean floor at low tide
to go to the island but have to return
within six hours or you would be
stranded over there until the next low
tide.
Margaret suggests that for anyone
wanting to go on a short vacation,
Ottawa is the place to go. There is a
wonderful light show on the
parliament buildings every night this
month.
The trip concluded their 150th
project to travel across Canada. They
have visited nine provinces and one
territory.
