Priors open Brussels Self Storage in industrial park
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Tim and Donna Prior, owners of
Brussels Agri -Services and The
Cowboy Loft, have added Brussels
Self Storage to their business
portfolio in an effort to bring self
storage back to the village.
The couple has purchased a lot in
the Brussels Industrial Park, which
is now open for business. The
lot features a 34 -unit self
storage building, with a vacant lot
beside it that will allow

Addressing a need
Tim and Donna Prior recently opened Brussels Self Storage in the Brussels Industrial Park.
The site has 34 self storage units as well as space to expand if necessary. To mark the opening
of the site, an open house and barbecue will be held at the site on Aug. 26. (Shawn Coughlin photo)

for expansion if the demand is there.
Prior says the couple first
expressed interest in buying the lot
four months ago. A friend of theirs
told the Priors that self storage is a
decent business in which to be
involved and they decided they
would give it a try.
The units were built in 2005, but
had not been operational for the last
three years. Tim then got in touch
with the owner, who was now living
in British Columbia, and hammered
out a deal for the business.
While Tim feels that the business
would be a good addition to his fleet,
he says he wonders where he'll find
the time to run a third business,
especially with the International
Plowing Match in Walton, of which
Brussels Agri -Services and The
Cowboy Loft are major sponsors,
right around the corner.
However, he says that a business
like self storage largely runs itself,
so it shouldn't be too much of a
concern. Everyone can use a little
more storage space, he said, and
that's what he's hoping to provide
with the family's newest business
venture.
To celebrate the opening of the
new business, the Priors are hosting
an open house and free barbecue on
Saturday, Aug. 26 from 11:30 a.m. to
1:30 p.m. at the 210 Industrial Park
location. All are welcome.
Legion preparing for IPM meal fundraising
By Jo -Ann McDonald
The Brussels Legion Branch
received notice of the sudden death
of Comrade Paul Machan. Our
sympathies are extended to his
family. The service was held on
Monday in Goderich. Comrade Paul
has been a member of the Branch for
about five years and had been a
member of the Royal Canadian
Legion for 27 years. He loved to
play euchre and had attended the
Saturday afternoon euchre when he
was able. He also played for the
Branch at the Zone level several
times. Our condolences to his
family. Comrades Deb Ross and Jo-
Ann McDonald attended the
visitation in Goderich.
The Branch had a busy Saturday
with three functions. The day started
before lunch with the anticipated
arrival of many motorcycles.
Comrades Sandra Josling and Deb
Cann awaited the arrival of the
group. There were approximately 32
bikers, which with riders, made 50.

hour and then travelled on to their
next destination.
The second event was the
Saturday afternoon euchre. Comrade
Glenn Bridge was joined by
Comrade Deb after her assistance
upstairs to help him. There were 11 -
and -a -half tables of players hoping
to win the top prize. Winners were:
first, Lois and Millie, 77: Carol and
Susan, 76; third, Hazel and Janet,
73; lone hands, Edna and Judy, eight
and low, Mae and Lillian, 44. Euchre
is every two weeks.
The third event for Saturday was

New executive
Earlier this year, the Brussels Branch 218 of the Royal Canadian Legion installed its 2017/18
executive, who is now hard at work preparing for the International Plowing Match. Back row,

event. They fed 150 hungry diners.
Cooking for the Branch were Eric
and Deb Ross, Barry O'Krafta and
Ron Schmidt. They did a great job
and everyone thought it was
delicious.
The Sunday night dance had a
crowd of over 80 people to enjoy the
music of the John Heaman Band for
one more time. John is retiring from
the dance circuit and has one more
dance at the Brussels Legion in
October. The night was special as
the crowd celebrated the 90th
birthday of Bruce Bennett and
everyone enjoyed birthday cake.
Congrats Bruce!
It is only four weeks until the
Plowing Match and the Brussels
Legion is preparing for its
fundraising. The Legion is going to
serve meals from Sunday to
Thursday at supper time.
Reservations will be required.
They are going to bus the campers
from the IPM RV park to enjoy the
home -cooked meals. They hope to
feed 200 people every night
including the campers and the
public. Watch for more
information and the flyers with the
menus.
The Branch will need lots of help
and hope to have three shifts of
people to get ready; prep work and
serve and clean up. Students looking
for community service hours are
welcome to call the Branch and be
on the list of helpers.
