Barn quilt to collect signatures at Fall Fair, IPM Ready and waiting Brian Schlosser, secretary of the Brussels Agricultural Society, wants to add to his family's beautiful barn quilt, called Norah's Pinwheel. He will have it on display at the Brussels Fall Fair tent at this year's International Plowing Match, asking all visitors to sign it and perhaps leave a little message before he seals it back up again and returns it to his barn. (Photo submitted) By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Like many others around Huron County, Brian Schlosser from the Brussels area has added a beautifully -crafted barn quilt to his homestead. Over five days this September, however, he hopes that IPM visitors will add substantially to his barn quilt. Schlosser, who is the secretary of the Brussels Agricultural Society, erected the barn quilt, which he called "Norah's Pinwheel" earlier this year. Next month, however, he'll be taking it down and it will adorn the Brussels Fall Fair tent, which will be at this year's International Plowing Match in Walton. That's not all, however, as Schlosser is asking all who make their way through the Fall Fair tent to sign the barn quilt. He hopes that visitors will sign, perhaps write their home town and maybe a small message about the IPM or the fair. Once the IPM is over, he'll re -seal the barn quilt and raise it again. Schlosser said that the idea came to him during a recent trip and he saw a vehicle and the owner invited people to sign it. He thought it would be a great idea to create something similar for the IPM and for the Brussels Fall Fair being hosted at the match. Jim and Leona Armstrong will also be contributing their barn quilt to the Brussels Fall Fair exhibit at the match, although theirs will not be available for visitors to sign. As for the Brussels Fall Fair at the IPM, Schlosser says the Brussels Agricultural Society is hard at work preparing for the big week. The society just named Erin McMahon the Fall Fair ambassador on Saturday night and word has come down that the fair will be featuring a ferris wheel as part of its midway, which will provide amazing views of the IPM site to those at the top of the wheel. The fair will also feature a straw maze and a full performance tent that will put plenty of Huron County talent on stage every day of the match. New Brussels tanker possible By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen The Brussels division of the Huron East Fire Department may be purchasing a new tanker truck in the near future for the price of $334,541 plus tax. Huron East Fire Chief Marty Bedard presented a report to council at its Aug. 8 meeting, detailing the five tenders received for the purchase of a new truck. The potential purchase was discussed at the first meeting of the Brussels Fire Area Protection Committee, held on July 27 at the Brussels Fire Hall. The committee includes councillors from Huron East and Morris-Turnberry, as well as a number of Brussels firefighters. Bedard and the committee recommended purchasing the truck from Fort Garry out of Winnipeg. He said that the tender specified that the truck had to have a four -door cab with a larger pump and a tank so the unit could also serve as a pumper for the department. The lowest tender, from Darch in Ayr, was $307,000, but was for a two -door stock unit. The Fort Garry model was the cheapest four -door model, however, although all of the tenders came in over the budget of $300,000, which was based on a two -door cab, Bedard said. The recommendation was listed under the "notice of motions" section of the agenda and it will be formally discussed at Huron East Council's Aug. 22 meeting. McMahon, Sierran, Bernard all claim crowns A new dawn Erin McMahon, centre, was crowned Brussels Fall Fair Ambassador on Saturday night, meaning that she will represent the Brussels Agricultural Society and Fall Fair not only throughout 2017, but also at this year's fair, which will be held at the International Plowing Match, something that has never been done before. McMahon, of Bluevale, impressed judges and built upon her runner-up finish in last year's competition. "I would recommend that anyone looking to compete first take the time to understand what the ambassador program is about," she said. "It's not a program to be taken lightly. It's a lot of commitment, but if there is any interest at all, it's definitely a worthwhile experience." After a decade at the helm of the ambassador competition, Nicole Noble announced during the ambassador contest that she would be retiring and leaving the competition in the hands of Maggie Speer and Hannah McCutcheon. Noble thanked the Agricultural Society for letting her run the event and grow it in her own way, including the addition of the Little and Junior Ambassador contests. She said that, with 10 years under her belt and a young family to take care of, it was time to step away from the event. Rediscover what Huron County has to offer.
