Red and white
The Brussels Horticultural Society hosted a special Home Floral Contest earlier this summer
with a focus on red and white gardens to help celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary. The three
winners each received $25 for their gardening efforts. Above, Donna and Randy White stand

Council prepares for
large OPP meeting
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
North Huron Township Council
will be welcoming representatives
from the Ontario Provincial Police
(OPP) next month to discuss
funding for the service in Blyth and
East Wawanosh.
In recent years, the price of the
service has increased substantially
for some municipalities, including
North Huron.
In anticipation of the report
bringing a large audience, council
discussed, during its Aug. 8
meeting, moving the meeting to the
Wingham Town Hall Theatre,
directly above the North Huron
Township Council chambers.
The meeting is going to be
proposed for later in September.
Interim Chief Administrative
Officer Larry McGregor reminded
council the event won't be a
decision-making meeting, but a
presentation of the report.
He also said that council could
permit questions from the floor if
they were regarding clarification of
the presentation.
North Huron is considering the
creation of an economic
development committee.
At the request of North Huron
Councillor Bill Knott, municipal
staff will be preparing a report with
suggestions on how to strike the
committee.
Knott said he would like to see the
committee comprised of members
of the two North Huron
BIAs, businesses in the
communities and municipal
representation.
Councillor Trevor Seip said he
liked the idea, but only if there were
measurable achievements for the
committee.
Interim Chief Administrative
Officer Larry McGregor said, in his
experiences, setting goals at the
beginning of the year worked well
for economic development
committees.
The report will be brought back to
a future council meeting.
Construction up in M -T
Building values are up
significantly in Morris-Turnberry
this year, but the number of permits
issued has increased only
marginally.
In a report by Morris-Turnberry
Chief Building Official Kirk
Livingston during Morris-Turnberry
Council's Aug. 1 meeting, he says
that there have been 64 permits
issued as of the end of July, one
more than in 2016.
The difference in the value of
those permits, however, was
substantial, with construction
costing $7,002,645 in 2017 and only
$4,068,079 in 2016.
That difference of nearly $3
million represents an increase of
approximately 60 per cent in
construction cost.
Livingston explained
neighbouring municipalities have
similar situations with permit
numbers being near or at where they
were last year.
Mayor Paul Gowing said it was
great to see development across the
northern end of the county,
especially with the value of
construction happening in Morris-
Turnberry.
