Congratulations to Eric Boettcher
on his marriage to Etta recently. The
young couple is living on the main
farm until such time as they will
build their own home. Proud parents
are Chris and Gabrielle Boettcher.
Brussels has lost a couple of
familiar faces these past few weeks.
We wish Arnold and Chantelle den
Dekker and family the best in their
new surroundings. They have moved
to Grey Township and the den
Dekker home farm. Congratulations
to them!
Some ambitious young children
wanted to do something for a good
cause last week. They decided to set
up a lemonade stand in front of
Murray Lowe's barbershop. They
sold lemonade, cookies, Rice
Krispies squares and chocolate -
covered licorice. They are raising
money for the Terry Fox Run. The
young people are the grandchildren
of Beth Earl and a few friends. Beth
was the first chaperone and then
another parent supervised. I believe
the children did very well on the
"fun" fundraising adventure.
The Walton Women's Institute
members met at the home of Marion
Godkin. They were making plans for

their display in the Brussels Fall Fair
tent at the International Plowing
Match. They had many good ideas
and the ladies enjoying the
discussion included Marion, Helen
Craig, Margaret Shortreed, Brenda
Perrie, Ruth Axtmann and Marjory
Humphries.
The breakfast crew at the Walton
Inn had a sweet surprise on Saturday
morning. Breakfast was topped off
with a piece of birthday cake. Floyd
Nesbitt was celebrating his 80th
birthday and his daughter Sam
arrived with birthday cake. Happy
birthday to Floyd!
We have had some happy news at
out home. Our daughter LeeAnn is
engaged to Craig Ellis and they are
busily planning a wedding. We
congratulate our happy pair and look
forward to the big day!
Jim and Leona Armstrong
travelled to Oshkosh, Wisconsin for
maybe the last time. They have been
going to the largest fly -in for
airplanes for many, many years.
They worked and volunteered for
many years but this year, it was just
for fun, visiting old friends and
enjoying the friendships they have
made over the years. Daughter
Leanne went with them and they
were away for five days. Their sons
Robert and Bruce and his wife
Claudette also attended and
volunteered at the huge event.
A reminder to folks to keep sheds
locked as there have been some
thefts around the area. A local young
man had both his motorcycles stolen.
The thieves broke into the shed.
Locks will keep some out but not all.
There was a nice crowd in
attendance at the shower for
Lorraine Blake. She received many
beautiful gifts and a delicious lunch
was enjoyed by all. Lorraine is the
daughter of Jim and Evelyn Blake
and will be married in September.
The shower was hosted by Lisa

The decorating committee has
been busy around Walton and the
plowing match site. The hydro poles
have been wrapped with lime green
and orange colours and bows
adorning many other ones. Bows and
wrap can be purchased at the
headquarters at Walton Hall. The
decorating committee will also help
you with the wrapping or decorating.
Congratulations to Chris and
Candace Riley on the birth of their
first child. They have welcomed a
daughter Destiny to their lives.
Proud grandparents are Eric and Deb
Ross and Jayne Ross and Keith
White. Congrats to all.
Our condolences to the family of
Barb Fritz on her passing. She will
be missed by her husband Jim and
family of Tim, Kim, Steve and Greg
and their families. Barb was a
special lady with a wealth of talents.
She was a caring and compassionate
caregiver during her many years
working as a RNA, graduating from
Wingham Hospital in the 1960s. She
became a busy wife and mother
working, choring, cooking, farming
alongside her husband. As the years
went by, her expanding role included
chauffeur, innkeeper, sports fan,
organizer, babysitter, nurturer,
decorator, salesperson and most
importantly, a loving wife, mother
and grandmother. She will be missed
by many and our sympathies to all.
Our get -well wishes go to Dianne
Huether who suffered a fall. We
hope she is a fast healer!
Our sympathies are extended to
Janice Dixon Machan and her family
on the passing of her father Ivan
Dixon. It is always a struggle to lose
a parent and we wish Janice our best.
Our condolences to her and her
family.
Having a wonderful week in our
area is a former resident. Helen
Johnson McLean of St. Catharines
spent a week here with sister Leona
Armstrong. She hoped to see about a
dozen old acquaintances and in the
many of her outings with Leona, she
managed to see almost 40. One
adventure was going to the Blyth
Festival, joined by sister Doris
McKinley of London. The sisters
had a wonderful time.
Returning from a 12 -day coach
tour is Valerie Shortreed. She was
joined by Mac and Janet Webster for
a trip to Newfoundland and
Labrador. They flew to St. Johns on
their way there and then flew out of
Deer Lake to return home. They
went whale watching and saw
massive icebergs. They had great
weather with no rain but lots of
wind. The wind is actually
welcomed in Labrador, because it
keeps the black flies away. Most
people there wear protective
clothing most of the time if they are
going to be outdoors for extended
periods of time. They enjoyed the
ferry ride across to Labrador and the
beautiful landscape of both areas.
Newfoundland has more trees and
green vegetation and Labrador is
more rocky.
There were lots of interesting sites
and lighthouses to see and the people
were friendly. There was good food
and entertainment most nights to
enjoy. The one thing Newfoundland
is noted for is moose and that is the
one thing they did not see. An odd
thing for sure. Welcome home all.
A familiar face is around the area
again and that is Rae McClure. He is
home for his summer visit and to
attend the wedding of a nephew.
Matthew Johns was married last
weekend. He is the son of Caroline
(McClure) and Gerald Johns. Rae
will be around for a couple of weeks
staying with some of his siblings
to have a chance to visit
with all!
Celebrating a special birthday this
past week was Marg Work. Marg
was treated by her family on Sunday,
Aug. 13 at the Beach Street Station
in Goderich for her 90th birthday. A
very special surprise was the
attendance of her son, Ken, from
Hinton, Alberta. The number 13 is a
special day to Marg, as she has two
daughters, one grandson and in the
Work history, a great -great-
grandfather was married on the the
13th: Jan. 13, 1815. The number 13
is not considered a lucky number but
Marg feels it is!
Marg also celebrated her birthday
another day with Jim and Shirley
Bowman. They went out for a late
breakfast and then toured around the
area and then had an early dinner
enjoying Chinese food.
Our sympathies are extended to
the Davidson family on the passing
of Linda Davidson. She will be
missed by her husband Doug and
their children Blair and Becky and
their families. She will also be
missed by her sisters Shirley and
Irene and her mother-in-law Mary
Davidson and sisters-in-law Joyce,
Anne and Connie. Our condolences
to all.
Stevenson and Rita Bowers.
The Walton Raceway hosted
remote control race cars on a wet
weekend. The first day of racing had
to be cancelled due to the wet
weather but the races did go on the
Sunday. Even at our place you could
hear the drone of the cars when
racing. It ended up being a good day
for the racers.
Locals visit Ireland
Celebrating their 30th wedding
anniversary were Steve and Rita
Bowers. They did it in style by
going on a trip to Ireland. Rita had
been in Ireland 35 years ago and
could see the many changes. They
travelled 2,300 kilometres in 15
days and their 60 -year-old tour
guide was amazing in his knowledge
of the areas. In the southwest in the
Republican Ireland it is rugged and
in the east is the agricultural area
where corn is grown near Dublin.
There is farmland where sheep are
raised also. On the Dingle Peninsula
there are peat bogs which are
harvested to be burned for fuel.
Steve was very interested in the
reforesting going on around the
areas. They reported that it rained
for about 20 minutes everyday, so it
is very lush and green. Northern
Ireland was where there has been
civil unrest in the past and there
were many places where obvious
damage could be seen. They enjoyed
good food, great entertainment and
the friendly folks of Ireland. A
wonderful trip and welcome home.
Members of our family went to
Staffa to celebrate my oldest
brother's 65th birthday. Doug and
his wife Eleanor both turn 65 in the
month of August so a double-header
party was held. LeeAnn and Craig
and Rick and I all enjoyed the
evening with the combined families.
Huronlea has welcomed some
new residents in the past while.
George and Shirley Wheeler are
there and Bill and Joan Stephenson
are now there. We wish them well in
their new surroundings.
Celebrating birthdays in the past
weeks include Jacob Nolan,
Courtney Pryce, Heidi McClure,
Kristen Grobbink, Curtis
McCallum, Luke McCallum, Bruce
Godkin, Angela Huether, Kenneth
Huether, Adrienne Wakabayashi,
Erin Mitchell, Marie Mitchell,
Laurie Grobbink, Daryl Houston,
Lisa Huether, Richard Love, Heidi
Bachert, Greg Humphries, Brian

Janmaat, Wendy Bachert, Taylar
McKee, Chris Bernard, Craig
Sullivan, Alicia McDonald, Floyd
Nesbitt, Mary Davidson, Craig
