Money raised by 140th celebration to go to Lions By Denny Scott The Citizen The Blyth 140th Anniversary celebration is being lauded as a success not only from an organizational standpoint but also from a financial one. At the Aug. 2 Blyth Business Improvement Area (BIA) meeting, Committee Chair Crystal Taylor explained that after all bills have been paid, the group expects to realize a profit of approximately $2,000, which she urged the BIA donate to the Blyth Lions Club. Recently -installed Vice -Chair Gary van Leeuwen asked how close the Lions were to completing their current project at the Blyth Lions Park, where several of the Blyth 140th anniversary events were held. He was told that the project was not near completion, but even if it was, there are always other projects at the site. There was some discussion about the idea, however when it was pointed out that the advertising for the event said the Blyth Lions would benefit from the project, a motion to donate the funds passed. FESTIVAL OF WIZARDRY Bev Elliott asked if any bows that were used for the anniversary could be re -used for the upcoming Festival of Wizardry set to bring 9,000 people to the Blyth Campground in mid-October. She noted that the colours that were used for the anniversary celebration could also be used to decorate the village for the festival as there was some commonality to it. Taylor explained that there are rolls of leftover material that could be used as well as some bows that weren't sold. She said she would ask members of the committee about re- using the bows and materials. Local groups to host fundraiser From Marilyn's Desk By Marilyn Craig Call 523-9318 Record-setting Team Cowbell, a collection of cyclists sponsored by Blyth Cowbell Brewing Co., recently completed the MS Bike tour from Grand Bend to London and back, all in an effort to raise money to help battle multiple sclerosis. This year's ride, however, was one for the record books, as the team raised over $139,000 for the cause, becoming the first Ontario team to topple the $100,000, and did so with plenty of room to spare. The team consists of cyclist from all over Ontario, including several locals like Jeff Peters, Carla Pawitch and Shawn Loughlin. (Photo submitted) UC welcomes congregation back Greeting worshippers at Blyth United Church on Sunday, Aug. 13 was Marilyn Craig. Ushering were Tom Cronin and Marilyn Craig. Hillary MacDonald welcomed everyone to church on such a beautiful Sunday morning. She drew everyone's attention to the announcements that were printed in the bulletin. Special mention was that there are some caterings coming up that still need help. Bonanza weekend, Aug. 17-18 and Thresher Reunion weekend is fast approaching — help is needed for Aug. 29, Sept. 7, 8 and 9. If you can help please let Sharon Bromley know at 519-523-9421. Your help is greatly appreciated. Emily Phillips told the congregation that the loose change and the monthly donation from the church and the UCW would also be going to the Colton Smith Fund. Hillary lit the Christ candle and invited everyone to greet one another. The first hymn "It Only Takes a Spark" was sung followed by the call to worship repeated responsively and the prayer of approach. The scripture was from Matthew 14: 22-33. The congregation was treated to a medley of songs from a band of three men. In the scriptures, Matthew wants people to know who Jesus is and to ask questions. Matthew often describes Jesus trying to find a quiet place. In the scripture, Jesus asks the Disciples to trust in Him. He tells them that prayer and trust go hand in hand. Peter walks towards Jesus on the water until his trust fails and he goes into the water and calls for help. Jesus tells us that God is our anchor. Often if we can see the move we are going to make before we do the task and trust our mind, it will happen. Never let your eye off the target. Jesus taught us that we are not alone, we are in God's world. We should stop, breathe and then go forward. God is with us always. The offering was received followed by the offertory response "Grant Us God the Grace", the offertory prayer, the prayers for the people, silent prayers and the singing of the Lord's Prayer. The last hymn "I Feel the Winds of God" was sung followed by the benediction and the band singing another medley of songs. Everyone was invited for coffee and treats. It is not our business to re -write Bible verses! (J.R. Miller) "I will praise the LORD at all times; His praise will always be on my lips" Psalm 34:1 It is not hard to praise the Lord at some times. There are days when all is bright. There is no sickness in our house. No recent sorrow has left our heart sad. It is easy then, to praise the Lord. But there are other times when things are different. Business is not prosperous --or health is broken. We begin to say this verse --but we cannot get through it: "I will praise the Lord at..." We cannot bless the Lord for the broken health --or for the empty chair. Yet there the words stand. We cannot make them read: "I will praise the Lord at some times; His praise will be on my lips on certain days --days when the sun shines. It is not our business to re -write Bible verses --but it is our business rather to bring our lives up to the standard of the inspired words. So we must learn to say the verse just as it is written. We must learn to bless the Lord on the dark days --as well as the bright days. We must learn to praise God in pain --as well as in pleasure. Have we learned this lesson?
