Brussels native competes at tree climbing event Climbing high Kali Alcorn, originally of Brussels, participated at the International Tree Climbing Championship in Washington, D.C. at the end of July. Alcorn competed at the event two years ago in Texas and placed 13th. (Sidney Davies photography) At the Branch A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 I think this summer will be remembered as the green one. The rain that we have received in varying amounts has had a visible effect on certain plants, with growth spurts that are unbelievable unless you were watching close. Rain gauges were a useful thing as water levels made for interesting discussion. The arborists of the world held their International Tree Climbing Championships in Washington D.C. the end of July. Kali Alcorn attended, making this her third competition, representing the Prairies. Mama MaryAnn Thompson was there as a proud spectator. Kali has found her niche in the world with trees and uses her passion and stamina to climb huge trees, lugging up to the treetop chainsaws and other needed equipment to get the things done that are the requirements of a competition. The ginkgo tree just down from Grandma Joan Bernard's house was one of the first trees that caught Kali's interest. So way to go Kali, keep climbing. Rev. Charmila Ireland was inducted/received by the congregations of Melville Presbyterian and St. Andrew's Molesworth on Sunday evening. Visitors from Huron Perth Presbytery, friends and family from Teeswater, and Brussels friends joined the members of the congregations in this celebration. Welcome to Brussels Charmila. I'm looking forward to some new things happening with Zoellyn at the helm of the funeral home, Hillary nudging the United Church and the Charmila with the Presbyterians. Time to learn some new things. Look out lady leadership is here and not old ladies either. Go girls! A drive by the International Plowing Match site says things are happening. Bales with new purpose bring a smile, indicating you're on the road to the IPM. For the leadership, I'm sure it's a relief to see something beyond paper. Volunteer positions are seeing action as the time draws nearer. Now it's time to take big breaths and smile. Sept. 19-23 is when we can attend and see the results of hours of meetings, preparation and work. Good job people. There's something about August that switches gears. Not sure if it's the early nightfall, the back -to - school advertisements or the conclusion of soccer and ball seasons, but it's there. That feeling that summer is over and the McMahon named Brussels Fair Ambassador Competing The Brussels Legion Branch hosted the annual Brussels Fall Fair Ambassador competition over the weekend. Four contestants vied for the crown that was eventually won by Erin McMahon. (Denny Scott photo) By Jo -Ann McDonald Two weeks have went by quickly and the Brussels Legion Branch played host to a few functions. The Saturday afternoon euchre was held on the long weekend, but there was no dance. The Branch received a generous donation of an attractive cigarette butt container from a member a few weeks ago. It did not take long for it to disappear from the front of the Legion. It has been stolen! Any information concerning the theft can be given by calling the police in Wingham or maybe it can be returned as quietly as it was stolen. The Branch held its first two Blyth Festival dinners on Friday and Saturday evenings. The groups of 28 and 29 enjoyed a roast beef dinner at 6:15 p.m. each night. Folks attending had either been to the performance in the afternoon or were going to the evening performance that night. All agreed it was a delicious meal. Comrades Jo- Ann McDonald, Judy Lee and Deb Cann looked after serving the meals both nights. The Branch will host another meal in September. The fish fry crew was in Mitchell on Friday evening of the long weekend to feed a crowd of just over 300 people. The Mitchell Lions always have a good crowd at the event. Working for the Branch included Jo -Ann and Deb thawing the fish and Comrades Sandra Josling Brown, Catrina Josling, Deb Ross, Mabel Glanville, Lisa Glanville and Joan Smith looking after the cooking. Great job by all. The Zone and District Sports meeting was held on Saturday morning in Palmerston and Jo -Ann McDonald attended in place of Branch Sports Officer Ron Schmidt. The Branch will be hosting both a Zone event and a District event this upcoming sports year. Both events are Mixed Dart competitions. The first is in January and the other is in April. The fall Zone Council meeting was held in Hensall on Sunday. Attending was President Jamie Mitchell. The PRO report was sent in by Comrade Jo -Ann McDonald. We are pleased to hear that Comrade Adam Smith is now in Stratford Hospital. We hope he has continued improvement. We send get -well wishes to Comrade Bill Eckmier who is a patient in Listowel Hospital. We hope he is improving. The Branch donated the use of the building for the Brussels Fall Fair Ambassador competition on Saturday evening. Four lovely young ladies were vying for the title. President Jamie Mitchell was on hand to support Danielle Bernard, who was sponsored by the Branch. The group of 17 enjoyed a chicken dinner provided by the Branch before the evening part of the event. Comrades Lisa Glanville and Joan Smith were in charge of the meal. Congratulations to all the girls and to Erin McMahon as the new ambassador for Brussels Fall Fair. Congratulations to Ryan Jacklin who again captured gold in his track and field competition. He was in Manitoba for the National Youth Track and Field Games on the Ontario team and captured gold in shot put, silver in discus and bronze in the javelin event. Way to go Ryan! anticipation of school and September just slips in. Time is moving along. Grab the next few weeks and get all you can from this summer — plays, picnics, concerts, beach days.
