Huron East approves pavement testing near Walton By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen The Huron East Public Works Department has been given the go- ahead for a test site to potentially reinforce its paving work. Council approved a request from Public Works Manager Barry Mills at its July 25 meeting. Mills said that adding reinforcing fibre material to the top coat of an asphalt mix on an existing contract site in Huron East would cost just under $8,300. "When the 2017 paving contract was called, a provisional item was to include a reinforcing fibre mix to one of the roads being repaved," Mills said in his report. "There are two blocks of Sawmill Road and Hullett-McKillop Road west of North Line being repaved this year. The projected cost of adding the fibre mix to an entire two -block section was close to $27,000 and pushed our asphalt budget over budget." In order to not exceed the municipality's budget, especially in such a cash-strapped year with the municipality contributing so much to hosting the International Plowing Match in Walton this September, Mills suggested a test site that wouldn't exceed the municipality's existing budget. "What is being proposed is to add the fibre to the top coat mix for a single lane for a two -kilometre stretch leading up to the stop sign," Mills said. "The adjoining lane will be repaved with the typical asphalt mix and the two lanes side-by-side should provide a good comparison in future years. By only doing a single land with fibre mix, the total asphalt contract will remain within our budget allowance." Mills told councillors that a potential test site that had been mentioned at a previous council meeting wasn't preferred by him and he felt that Sawmill and Hullett- McKillop Roads would be superior sites. "It had been suggested at the previous meeting to consider extending the pavement on Summerhill Road past the gravel pit entrances as a test for the fibre mesh," Mills said in his report. "The cost to extend the pavement would be $21,000 plus shoulder material and is not viewed as the preferred test site for the fibre mesh or a priority of the municipality in terms of paving. Our staff has estimated that the extra grading dedicated to this area because of the gravel pits is about six hours per year." Council approved Mills' recommendation and the test site will go ahead as part of the repaving of Sawmill and Hullett-McKillop Roads projects later this year. The wheat crop is coming off and a whole week of good weather will really help everyone get the job done. Let's all hope that happens and the hard-working staff of The Citizen have a great week of weather to enjoy their week of holidays! Our get -well wishes go out to quite a few this week. Ross Smith has had a hip replacement and we hope he comes along nicely. He is now in Seaforth Hospital. Unfortunately, his wife Shirley has had a health issue and she is in Seaforth Hospital as well. We hope both of them improve. Joan Stephenson has had a health concern and is a patient in Wingham Hospital. We wish her the best and hope she is soon home again. Celebrating a milestone birthday was Naomi Pryce. Naomi was joined by her seven children at Huronview where she resides, to enjoy cake and ice cream for her birthday. She has reached the milestone of 90 years young. Congratulations Naomi. Our condolences to Marlene Fischer and family on the passing of her mother Helen Cascagnette. She will be missed by her family of Barry, Marlene and Joan and their families. She will be missed by her extended Sellers and Pletch families. She had been a resident of Huronlea for a short time.
