Leading the service The Brussels Ministerial group held an outdoor worship service at Brussels Conservation Park on July 30 that featured special spiritual speakers and musical guests the Hillier family. The family played some familiar tunes and a few that had those in attendance thinking back to remember the tunes and the words. Retired Pastor Sandra Cable started the service, introducing the Hilliers and thanking the community for its support on behalf of the Brussels Mennonite Fellowship, Brussels United Church, Melville Presbyterian Church, St. Ambrose Catholic Church and St. John's Anglican Church. (Denny Scott photo) At the Branch Branch prepares for IPM meals By Jo -Ann McDonald The week at the Brussels Legion Branch started with the executive meeting held on Tuesday evening. There were nine Comrades present. The normal business was discussed and the treasurer's report heard. There is still fundraising to be done to complete the accessibility project in full. The Canada Day draw and fish fry were a great success and plans for a Christmas draw are now in the works. There have been some improvements completed including the installation of a new back door. The blocked down -pipe has been fixed and eavestroughs cleaned. The cracks in the main hall are being repaired at this time and the air conditioner checked. There is always something to be fixed in a building. The ball tournament on the weekend was a success but not as busy as it has been in other years. Thank you to all the Comrades who gave their time in the food booth for their help, including the set-up crew of Scott McDonald who moved the shack, Lisa Glanville and Joan Smith, who cleaned the shack, Jo- Ann McDonald who purchased supplies for the shack and Sandra Josling Brown who organized the help for the weekend. On Friday the set-up crew included Lisa, Joan, Sandra, Jo -Ann, Deb Ross and Judy Lee and the help of two strong men from Montgomery's Body Shop to help get the freezer on the trailer. Working in the shack over the weekend were Andy Overholt, Darwin Rose, John Lowe, Ron and Daisy Schmidt, Sandra Josling Brown, Glenn Bridge, Deb Ross, Deb Cann, Mabel Glanville, Randy White, Jamie Mitchell, Catrina Josling, Bob Kellington, Chris Brown, Nanci Ducharme, Greg Wilson, Jim Brown, Mike Dauphin, Jo -Ann McDonald and Judy Lee. The clean-up crew included Chris, Deb Ross, Lisa, Joan, Judy and Jo- Ann, who brought everything back to the Branch. Comrades Lisa and Joan went the extra mile insuring the morning set- up and stocking was complete and Barrie Currie made sure the area was neat and tidy every day. The next big series of events for the Branch that will require lots of helpers are the nightly dinners to be served at the Branch during the International Plowing Match (IPM). There will be morning set-up and preparation crews, afternoon serving crews and nightly cleanup crews all needed. There will hopefully be a time during the day that will suit eeotaetwoo petit Q presents Sandy MacDonald & Danielle Doel FRIDAY, AUGUST 11 - 8:30 pm at the former Duff's United Church, Walton Two seatings for dinner at cafe prior to show: 6:00 & 7:15 pm Dinner Menu: Oven BBQ Chicken and Ribs Reservations are recommended - Take out available 401 Turnberry St., Brussels 519-887-8011 everyone to lend a hand. So here comes August and all that entails. It could be swimming lessons, holiday dates or just doing whatever we do best in summer — all good. Special things happen all summer long and the trick is to try to make your life co-ordinate with the ones you enjoy most. Many times, it's the first invitation that helps make your plans. So here's to summer and the variety of things to do. The summer worship service co- ordinated by the Brussels Ministerial was held on Sunday at the Conservation area. A beautiful setting on a lovely summer day complete with food made for a great time. The Hiller family from here led the service with their words and music. Good reports from many visitors and local church people made the day a success. A nice way for community to gather. The ballparks were busy on the weekend, starting on Friday night as the 46th fastball tournament got started. Think about that: 46 years! That's a lot of work and a lot of memories for a lot of people over those years. It's a tradition for Brussels Tigers that has stood the changes in life in those years. Well done, all you people who do the background work to make this happen every year. The Brussels Fall Fair is taking on a new venue this year, at the International Plowing Match site, and with that comes extra work for the fair people. Details are being considered and possibilities checked. As the time draws closer, offer to help if you can and if not, use your voice to be positive and give them encouragement for taking on this new venture. Have you had your summer meal yet? You know the one: new potatoes, fresh beans, tomatoes and corn? That for me says summer. Enjoy August and our bounty. Bye now, Betty G.W.
