Wetiding season reminds of bond with Jesus
By Pastor Andrew Versteeg

Summer time is sometimes known
as "wedding time." Many weddings
are often planned for the nice
weather of summer and for the
holidays that coincide. For our
family this has again proven to be
true and we are thankful to have
been invited to a few weddings this
summer. We enjoy being a part of
this special day for the couple being
married, and to see family and
friends.
Marriage is a blessing from the
Lord. In the beginning when God
created the heavens and the earth and
everything in them, He also created
man. Then God said, "It is not good
for a man to be alone, I will make a
helper suitable for him" (Genesis
2:18). A `helper' is a companion who
is a complement; a woman who
comes alongside her husband to
complete him and to do life together
with him.
Recently a young man who was
seriously thinking about marriage
asked me what I enjoyed the most
about marriage. My answer was that
I had a companion, a friend, who has
become my best friend to do life
with. This is someone who I can talk
to and share my thoughts and
struggles and joys with. She is
someone who gives me strength and
we have found out that doing things
together is always the best way.
The Lord showed this to us early
in our marriage. We had done some
pre -marriage counselling with our
pastor who emphasized this point to
us. Then the Lord made it clear to us
through a living illustration. We
were in a cafe waiting for our lunch
and there was this triangular piece of
wood on the table with little holes
and golf tees in them. This was a
little game to pass time and the
object was to use the `tees' to jump
over other `tees' and to eliminate the
`tees' you jumped over, until there
was only one 'tee' left. Most of you
have seen games like this. We each
tried our hand at the game but we
couldn't get it down to one `tee'. But
when we did it together we got it
every time.
The scriptures teach us that when
we get married we become "one
flesh" (Genesis 2:24; Ephesians
5:31). This is a reference to our
sexual union in marriage and it is
also a reference to our oneness in
life. Marriage is an exclusive
intimate relationship between a man
and woman that binds them together
in promise to each other. In order to
experience the blessing of God in
our marriages we have to see it like
this. Our relationship to our spouse
is to be our top priority when it
comes to human relationships and

other life interests. No other people

our relationship with our spouse.
Going extreme
Kids' Corner Vacation Bible School in Brussels is always a
highlight of the summer for many local youths and this year
was no different. Here, leader Chris TenPas, left, played a
game of extreme rock, paper, scissors with Jason Kuepfer.

This takes some effort and
planning. You need to plan to do
things together; just you and your
spouse. Love grows and flourishes in
these special times. You need to be
together, as much as it is possible, in
the day-to-day things of life too.
Things like eating together,
shopping, visiting, camping and
holidays are ways in which we do
life together. Doing this and taking
interest in the things that interest
your spouse will cause your
friendship and love for each other to
deepen. This is God's way.
Ultimately we also see in the
Scriptures that marriage is a living
illustration of the relationship that
Jesus Christ has with those who
know Him as their Savior. His eye is
exclusively on us and He calls us His
bride. In the same way that we need
to take time to know our spouse, we
also need to do this with Jesus. He
loves us, He has laid down His life
for us, and He will be faithful to us
to the end. He calls us to do life with
Him and in Him find true life.
"I am the vine and you are the
branches; he who abides in Me and I
in him, he bears much fruit, for apart
from Me you can do nothing. ...
These things I have spoken to you so
that My joy may be in you, and that
your joy may be made full" (John
15:5,11).
