IPM to mark 150th on Sept. 23
This is a milestone year. As we
celebrate the 100th International
Plowing Match and Rural Expo
(IPM 2017), Saturday, Sept. 23 we
will celebrate Canada's 150th
birthday and its sesquicentennial
themes of youth, diversity and the
contributions of Canada's
Indigenous People.
The IPM has partnered with BMO
Kids Day on Saturday, Sept. 23 as
the first-ever Princess of the Furrow
Competition begins on the Mutuals
Stage. The Brussels Fall Fair stage
will be host to the Regional 4-H
Competition "Go for the Gold",
where youth from Huron, Bruce,
Perth and Grey Counties compete
for the chance to move on to the
Royal Winter Fair. Another highlight
honouring youth includes IPM 2017
hosting the first 4-H Invitational
Beef and Sheep Show where over
150 youth will be participating.
Arrive early Saturday to the main
stage to claim your seat to see
diverse acts including, Swiss
Yodelling Choir, Metis Fiddler
Quartet and the First Nations group
Eagle Flight Singers and Dancers.
At the Mutuals Stage, check out the
Huron County Cloggers who take on
a tap -style clogging with origins of

PEOPLE AROUND
BELGRAVE

The Belgrave UCW hosted their
annual over -80 celebration last week
with approximately 40 in
attendance. The church basement
was beautifully decorated honouring
Canada's 150th. There was lots of
laughter as Elly Dow welcomed
everyone and shared some good
stories. The Town and Country
Cousins trio of Rena Forrester, John
McDowell and Gladys Hutchins
entertained all with their lively
music.
On request, John sang the song he
wrote about the Belgrave
intermediates of 1963 much to the
delight of 1963 team members in
attendance: George Proctor, Bill
Coultes and Ivan Dow.
The party wound up with the
youngest octogenarian, George
Proctor, lighting the birthday cake
candles while "Happy Birthday"
was sung. Ross Taylor was
acknowledged as the oldest guest
present. Angel food cake,
strawberries, conversation, hugs and
handshakes were enjoyed by all. Pat
Hunking thanked the UCW for
another lovely birthday gathering.
Church will begin again at Knox
United Church on Sunday, Aug. 6
with guest preacher Elly Dow and
special music by Jim Taylor.
Refreshments and gathering time
are at 10:45 a.m. and worship is at
11:15 a.m. Everyone is always
welcome.
Showcase to learn more about
Indigenous People's contribution to
agriculture. Walk through the Huron
County Library Storytime Trail to
learn about Indigenous Agriculture
including the `Three Sisters' — corn,
beans and squash and learn about
the First Nation's Medicine Wheel
and its significance told by elders
from Saugeen First Nation.
Last but not least, the IPM is
honoured to be able to fly a
Canadian flag over tented city that
was previously flown on the Peace
Tower of Parliament Hill. The flag,
15 feet wide and seven -and -a -half
feet tall, will be raised Wednesday,
Sept. 6 prior to the match, adding to
the backdrop as we continue to build
Tented City.
IPM 2017 takes place Sept. 19-23
with advance tickets being sold
throughout Huron County.
