What a night
Jack Lee, formerly of Blyth and Londesborough, was honoured on Saturday night by the
Western Ontario Athletic Association at its 75th anniversary gala in Wingham. Lee worked
extensively with hockey refereeing in Blyth and often wouldn't accept payment for his work with
service clubs and their events. Members of the Lee family were on hand for the very special
night for their family. From left: Beverley McGrath, Jack's daughter; Chris Lee, Jack's grandson;

Hometown Heroes raises $55k
The Hometown Heroes "Raise a
Little Health" charity hockey game
proved to be a huge success on July
21 at the Maitland Recreational
Centre in Goderich with the game
raising a record $55,000.
The game featured Buffalo Sabres
center and Huron County native
Ryan O'Reilly and 2002 Stanley
Cup Champion and Seaforth native
Boyd Devereaux. Team O'Reilly
defeated Team Devereaux by a score
of 9-7.
"It was another fantastic year for
Hometown Heroes. Since 2014 we
have raised $185,000 for three
community groups," said Ben Lobb,
MP for Huron -Bruce. "We are very
proud of the energy, enthusiasm, and
generosity put forth by our sponsors,
celebrity players, volunteers and the
community."
"Four years ago when Gateway
approached Ben Lobb for help he
suggested a charity hockey game.
On Friday night we proved once

again that a small community can
pull together and do great things!
Three important groups in the health
community have benefited
significantly from this support. All
recipient organizations agree once
again that our goal of raising public
awareness about the importance of
local healthcare, research and
physical fitness levels for children
has been reached," says Bruce
Quigley President and CEO of
Gateway Centre of Excellence in
Rural Health.
Since 2014 the charity hockey
game has raised $185,000. Proceeds
are being shared equally between the
Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital, the Gateway Centre for
Rural Health in Seaforth, and the
YMCA Strong Kids program.

The late Jack Lee, formerly of
Londesborough and Blyth, was
honoured over the weekend by the
Western Ontario Athletic
Association. Lee, who passed away
in 2013, was honoured as a
community sports builder.
Lee was honoured at the
organization's 75th Diamond
Jubilee Anniversary Banquet held in
Wingham on Saturday night. He was
nominated by the Blyth Lions Club,
Ryan Lee, Chris Lee and the Stewart
brothers, all of Blyth.
The Lions Club detailed a number
of Lee's achievements in its
nomination, including his work with
area hockey referees for an annual
Lions -sponsored hockey
tournament.
"For 35 years the Lions Club
hosted the Blyth Little Lion Novice
Hockey Tournament. Jack Lee
scheduled the referees for this
annual tournament," the nomination
read. "He volunteered his time to
referee numerous games throughout
the tournament each year and never
requested or accepted payment for
any of those games."
Beyond the Lions tournament, Lee
was well known as the man in
charge of hockey refereeing in Blyth
for decades.
Lee held the position of referee -
in -chief for the Blyth Minor Hockey
Association for a number of years,
scheduling all referees for all Blyth
games during that time.
"He recruited and encouraged
many young athletes to take up
refereeing. He provided training for
these new referees both on -ice and
off -ice. He was always there to assist
new referees throughout difficult
situations," the nomination read. "As
new rules were introduced, he would
attend team practice sessions to
explain rule changes and outline
situations where penalties were
warranted."
The Lions Club nomination also
said that Lee played both hockey
and softball in the Blyth and
Londesborough areas for a number
of years before taking up hockey
refereeing.
Ryan Lee, treasurer of the Blyth
Lions Club and Lee's grandson, said
the family was honoured to
remember Lee in this way.
"We are very humbled and
honoured that the Blyth Lions Club
and the community of Blyth
nominated Grandpa Jack for this
award," he said. "It was a great
pleasure in attending the [Western
Ontario Athletic Association] 75th
annual banquet and knowing he will
forever be a part of that
organization."

release. If anyone encounters issues
regarding the refunds, the release
encourages them to contact Tite
Racing Promotions' Mark Perrin, at
Mark@motocrosscanada.ca.
In the release, Perrin and Brett
Lee of Tite Racing Promotions, who
manage the Walton Raceway,
express regret at the decision.
"This is a devastating
development for everyone involved
in this cherished event," the release
states. "For 25 years this event has
been a point of pride for the
community of Walton, Huron
County, Walton Raceway and
motocross enthusiasts across
Canada. We will continue our
commitment to ensuring proper and
professional succession in the
growth of motocross."
Chris said that it will lead to an
odd August around the Walton
Raceway.
"For Judy and me, and for all of us
really, as the boys were pretty young
when we first started hosting the
event, the month will be a strange
one," he said. "For 25 years the
event has taken most of August to
plan and prepare for and, to have an
August where it's not on our minds
will be something strange"
