Well, we have just finished the
third week of summer holidays
from school and time is flying! Good
and bad weather to enjoy, a few jobs
done on my to-do list and I've
started work on a project for the
IPM. It will not take long for the
next five weeks to speed by.
Our Stevens family reunion was
held on Sunday at the home of Neil
McDonald in Bayfield. Relatives
from Clinton, Brampton, Guelph,
London, New Hamburg, Seaforth
and Walton enjoyed an afternoon of
visiting and then a delicious potluck
meal. It was great to hear the news
that our cousin, Darlene, in British
Columbia is safe and is awaiting the
news to head home, which she
received Monday morning. She has
been evacuated from her home for
two weeks and has spent the last five
days in Prince George. Her husband
is a volunteer firefighter and stayed
A new family business
Ralph Watson needed some help running the Brussels Farmers' Market barbecue stand last
Friday and didn't have to look further than his own family. Jill Graber joined the fun, cooking
up hot dogs and sausages for hungry shoppers. (Denny Scott photo)
Edge of Walton course welcomes 65
The Edge of Walton sports camp
was held last week with 65 children
taking part. The week-long camp
had the children divided into four
age groups with all having group
councillors. The children learned
about canoeing, trail bike riding,
archery, fishing at Dwyer's pond,
baseball camp, motocross camp and
of course, the exciting challenge
course. The camp is organized by
Melody Hodgson. The camp runs
from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily and
the children bring their own lunch.
Nutritious snacks and lots of water
are provided during the day. Some of
the councillors included Jake
Campbell, Laith Thompson, Caden
Lee, Hope and Faith Melady, Nicole
Townsend, Holden Lansink and Ava
Sterling to name some of them. They
have a closing ceremony that parents
are invited to and the children have
group pictures taken. They then
showed the parents their favorite
activity of the week and had a little
fun!
Congratulations to George and Pat
Langlois on the arrival of a third
great-grandchild. Proud parents are
Brent and Andrea Meyers, of
London, who have welcomed Ivadel
(Ivy) Meyers to their family. Proud
grandparents are Bill and Susan
Meyers and Andy and Darlene
Vanderveen. Congrats to all!
A celebration of life gathering was
held to honour the life of the late
Pieta Cousins of London on Sunday,
June 23 at Spencer Lodge. Many
family members and close friends
attended the gathering hosted by
Lawrie and Murray, Cathy, Nancy
and Janette Cousins. Many positive
tributes to Pieta were given by
Lawrie, Nancy and Cathy and a few
others.
A Sweet Adeline quartet
entertained with a few songs. Pieta
had been an active and dedicated
singer of the chorus for nearly 25
years. A beautiful display table of
finger foods was admired by many
and quickly disappeared as the
guests enjoyed the meal in the large
banquet room. Attending from the
Brussels area were Betty Campbell
and Laurie and Julie, John and
Merle Cousins and Ken, Doug and
Gwen, Emily Cousins and Tim and
Laura, John Van Vliet and Janice,
Debbie and Joyann and a few nieces
from Stratford.
Pieta arrived in Canada in 1949
with her parents and three siblings,
leaving two married sisters in
Holland. She was the last surviving
member of her family. Cathy, Nancy
and Janette had set up a few tables of
pictures, flowers and Dutch
memorabilia of Holland for the
guests to enjoy and reflect upon.
Cathy set off the finale when
everyone was given a pretty balloon.
They went outside and quietly
listened to the song "You Raised Me
Up" and everyone released their
balloons up into the sky in
remembrance of Pieta. It was a
lovely afternoon to honour a lovely
lady.
It is a sad day for the Lee family,
Tite Racing, the Walton area and the
motocross world with the
announcement of the cancellation of
the 2017 TransCan week. It was a
difficult decision I am sure for all
involved. We hope they can resolve
the problems and be back on track
for 2018.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Dianne Flood, Kelly
Boven, Emma Shortreed, Sharon
Godkin Patterson, Sherry McCall,
Corinna Stephenson Strong, Ken
Williamson, Sandra Josling Brown,
Christopher Ritchie, Curtis Ryan,
Andrew Van Vliet, Anne
Williamson, Karin McDonald,
Michael Warwick, Andrea Taylor,
Bradley Fraser, Laura Godkin,
Alivia McCall MacBain, Charles
Gulutzen, Lanette Todd, Jim
Blake, Kathy Elliott. Happy birthday
to all.
in 108 Mile Ranch to fight fires.
Darlene has been living in their
motorhome and moving from place
to place to stay ahead of the fires.
It was great to see the familiar face
of Jean Bewley on the streets of
Walton and Brussels last week. Jean
and her daughter Mary from Bolton
made a quick trip to our area so Jean
could see a few old friends. They
came up and stayed the night at the
Walton Inn and had a chance to see
some of the Walton folks. She had a
visit with the morning crew at the
Walton Inn coffee gathering and a
visit with Marjory Humphries. She
travelled to Brussels and I met up
with her for a visit then she headed
to JR's to visit with the Brussels
ladies at the coffee hour.
It was a short time in the area and
then it was back to Bolton, then
Markham and back to Bolton and to
bed. She was up early the next
morning and on the plane back to her
home in Airdrie, Alberta. Jean
certainly does well for a lady in her
90s. She was only here in Ontario for
a week and enjoyed time in Bolton
and at Wayne and Mary's cottage in
the north, a birthday party, time with
her grandson, and a visit to Walton
and Brussels. Nice to have seen you
Jean and we hope you had a good
flight home. Jean keeps up with the
Brussels news and reads The Citizen
online. Jean also has many Facebook
friends to keep her informed and up
to date.
Congratulations to Matt White and
partner Kim on the birth of a son.
They have welcomed Alexander
Randall William to their lives.
Excited grandparents are Randy and
Donna White, who now have a
grandson and two granddaughters to
love.
Our sympathy is extended to the
Achilles family on the passing of
Dwayne Achilles. Dwayne was the
son of the late Don Achilles and
Cathy McTaggert Achilles and Keith
Schaeffer. He was the brother of
Chrissy and Dan and will be missed
by his many relatives in our area
including the Lowe and Sills
families. Our condolences to all.
Our sympathies are extended to
the family of Bill Taylor on his
passing. He will be missed by
children Heather and Linda and their
families. Bill was predeceased by
wife Bonnie (Ritchie) Wilson Taylor.
Our condolences to all.
The work crew has moved onto the
farm of Jack Ryan to start
International Plowing Match
preparations. It will not be long until
rows of hydro poles will appear.
There are only 54 days until the
match begins! There is lots of work
to be done and volunteers are still
needed.
Wheat harvest started Friday for
some. Most around here found the
moisture around 18 per cent so they
stopped or kept going and sent the
wheat to the dryer systems. The rain
put a stop to any more harvest on the
weekend.
