The Citizen, 2017-07-27, Page 6PAGE 6. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 27, 2017. M -T to drop deputy -mayor position for next election By Denny Scott The Citizen The composition of Morris- Turnberry Council may include one less member be elected for the next municipal election. After council originally requested information regarding council size and composition earlier this year, Administrator Clerk -Treasurer Nancy Michie presented a report on the issue at council's July 17 meeting. The report indicated that, in the past, council has discussed options to change the composition of council including having the deputy -mayor selected from amongst the four council members being elected. Currently, Morris-Turnberry has six council members, four councillors, one deputy -mayor and one mayor. The proposed change will see the mayor and four council members elected at large. The council member with the most votes in the election will be named deputy -mayor if they accept the position, if not, however, council will appoint it amongst themselves. The decision came after Michie reported that Morris-Turnberry's number of councillors didn't match with other municipalities in the county. With the lowest population and number of households and third lowest assessment, Morris- Turnberry had the second -smallest council behind only Howick. Michie pointed out that, if council dropped a member, they would be tied with Howick and the number of residents represented per council member would increase from 582 to approximately 700, more in line with the rest of the county. Michie's report also included information from past discussions regarding the length of meetings and the structure of various committees that inclue council members. The former resulted, according to the report, in a suggestion that the procedural bylaw be amended for a potential third council meeting per month for drains, planning and deputation issues. Council didn't act on all the information in the report, instead Obituaries focusing on the changes recommended for council and leaving meeting planning and committee structures for a later date. For such a significant change, there was little debate among councillors as to how the municipality should be represented in the future. After the report was presented, council immediately moved to start the process to reduce the number of members of the incoming council from the next municipal election to five: four councillors and one mayor. The deputy -mayor will be the individual councillor with the most votes in the election unless he or she declines the position, in which case council will appoint a deputy -mayor. Michie, in her report, pointed out DIANNE MERO Dianne Mero, passed away suddenly while vacationing in northern Ontario, with family and friends by her side at Sudbury Health Sciences Hospital on Thursday, July 20, 2017.
