`Ipperwash' round table planned for museum
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
The Huron County Museum will
present a special moderated panel
focused on the challenges faced by
the creative team responsible he
Blyth Festival's play Ipperwash next
week.
Some of the tales behind the
creation of the play will be the focus
of a moderated discussion at the
Huron County Museum in Goderich
on Monday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m.
The event will feature Blyth
Festival Artistic Director Gil Garratt
and Ipperwash director and co -
playwright Jessica Carmichael
sharing the experiences she and co -
playwright Falen Johnson went
through to create the play.
Carmichael, along with Blyth
Festival General Manager Rachael
King, sat down with The Citizen to
talk about some of what the event
will entail.
When it came time to research the
play, Carmichael said there were
some challenges communicating
with the people of the Kettle and
Stony Point First Nation
communities.
"We're outsiders to Kettle and
Stony Point," Carmichael said. "I
have an Indigenous background but
I'm not Ojibway so [Johnson] and I
were outsiders."
She said making sure the people of
Kettle and Stony Point realized they
weren't appropriating their story and
their voice was a priority and it
proved an interesting challenge.
"Those are the kinds of issues that
could be discussed at the event,"
King said.
Snack time
The Brussels Community Bible Chapel held its annual Vacation Bible School last week and
plenty of local children were at the home of the church, the former Brussels Public School, to
take part. Taking a break and enjoying a bit of a snack were Melody, left, and Hannah. (Denny

minister to her. However, she prayed
in faith.
As she was praying she heard the
restaurant door open and in walked
these three men. As it turned out, in
her loneliness and isolation, God
sent, not one, not two, but three
pastors to minister to her on that
morning. She couldn't believe it.
God had answered her prayer. This
is why she was crying. They were
tears of joy and thankfulness. When
she told us this we stopped
everything and began to pray with
her and encourage her.
When I think of how big God is, I
remember this story. It is
particularly powerful for me
because I did not read this story in a
book. It isn't a story that happened
to someone else. No, I got to be part
of this amazing story of how a big
God helped one lonely woman who
prayed in faith and what she did
made a profound difference in her
life.
In Sunday School, we sang a
chorus that went like this, "My God
is so big, so strong and so mighty
there's nothing my God cannot do.
My God is so big, so strong and so
mighty there's nothing my God
cannot do... for you"
The best part of this song is that it
is absolutely true.

Thank you to all the people who have rallied around
us since Larry (Moe) Morrison's ATV accident May
20th, 2017 and most especially our friends who were
with us at the time of the accident. Without the
exceptional efforts of all the on -scene first responders
and the staff at Seaforth and London hospitals —
Larry would not be with us today.
The support, comfort and kindness shown through the constant texting of concerns and
well wishes allowed us to know we were surrounded and loved by you all throughout this
difficult time.
We cannot express our appreciation or thank the people of the communities enough who
coordinated the spectacular event for Larry. The very generous response humbles us
greatly...Larry saw all of the text, pictures and videos from that day and was genuinely
overwhelmed.
When a community of this size comes together like you did, our heartfelt thanks does not
seem to be enough. There are too many names to mention but all of our paths will cross
again and we are looking forward to that.

Carmichael said that forming a
relationship with the people at Kettle
and Stony Point was a joy and that
there are stories there that need to be
told, including how the land,
originally given, extended far past
Grand Bend.
"It's not well-known how much
land was taken," she said. "The pain
and hurt they faced isn't well-known
either."
The challenge with the play was
focusing on the stories that need to
be told, Carmichael said, which
stories need to be left out and what
needs to be stopped to promote
healing for the communities.
"We want to help people around
Kettle and Stony Point to begin
healing," she said.
Even the medium of theatre played
into the decision-making process for
Carmichael and Johnson. Choosing
theatre as oral storytelling honours
the traditions of the First Nations
people.
"With such a big play, we asked
ourselves why we were choosing
this vehicle," she said. "Oral
storytelling is an important part of
the history we're reviewing, so it
made sense"
Both King and Carmichael said
the moderated discussion will take a
deep look at issues like those
presented above.
The event is a realization of a
relationship between the Huron
County Museum and the Blyth
Festival, King said. The museum is
sponsoring the play and this was a
way to help connect the county
organization's sponsorship to an
educational opportunity.
