(Shawn Loughlin photo) Letter to the Editor Writer concerned with land rights THE EDITOR, Do the ratepayers of Huron East realize that as of Jan. 1, 2017 the Huron County Land Planning Department or the Corporation of Huron County or the Corporation of Huron East can claim clear title to all or any portion of private property in Huron East? As of Jan. 1, 2017, zoning and jurisdictional control has been in effect on private property for the required 10 years and now stands in law. Property owners were given notice of zoning (jurisdictional control) via tax assessments and the property owners did not have this removed during the 10 -year period. Property owners have now lost their property rights in court. Private property is also coming under conservation regulated lands. Elected Huron East councillors and Huron County councillors have the authority to repeat these bylaws. Most of these elected councillors own property in Huron East and their properties are or will be affected too. Ray Storey. McCall honoured The late Bruce McCall (1998), the long-time owner of Brussels Stockyards Limited, was recently honoured with inclusion on the Memorial Honour Roll of the Livestock Markets Association of Canada. The announcement was made at the association's recent national conference, which was held in Lethbridge, Alberta. McCall owned the Brussels Stockyards from 1970 to 1987. As a young man, McCall was trained as a cheese and buttermaker and before he moved to Brussels, he ran a beef feedlot near Embro. Friends have described McCall as being a good businessman and a supportive member of the community, always contributing to organizations like 4-H and others. McCall served as a long-time board member for the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority and he was a crucial member of the group that would go on to renovate the Brussels Dam. He was also involved in the local Masonic Lodge, attaining the 33rd degree of the Scottish Rite. At that time, McCall was the second -youngest Canadian to ever achieve that. McCall's wife Doris was also involved in the business for many years, serving at the lunch counter. She passed away in 2009. The McCalls raised a family of four: Sharon, Bonnie, Bob and Ross. Ross would go on to own Brussels Livestock, before moving on to create McCall Livestock in Brussels, which now employs his wife Fran and their son Matt and daughter Lacey Berlett.
