School Board seeks willing Homestay families
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
The Avon Maitland District
School Board's Homestay program
is seeing the highest uptake it ever
has according to local organizer
Shirley Lynch.
Through the program, students
from foreign countries like Brazil
and Italy visit schools within the
board. This year, there is a surplus of
students from Brazil interested in the
program, Lynch said, leading to
program organizers having to find
homes for the students.
"We have 15 Brazilian students
coming to Central Huron Secondary
School," Lynch said. "There are also
students from Italy and Spain
coming."
Across the board, Lynch said
between 140 and 150 Brazilian
students are coming to the area,
which is up considerably from
previous years.
"We're looking for families,"
Lynch said. "That means any and all
families are welcome to apply. We're
looking for young families, families
with children, empty nesters and
everything in between"
Lynch explained that the
organization tries to find situations
similar to those that the students
have at home so they can feel as
comfortable as possible.
For example, students that live
with younger or older siblings will
be placed, if possible, with similar -
aged siblings and people who live
with a grandparent will find
themselves in a similar situation in
Canada.
"We try to connect everything,"
Lynch said. "Religion, interests,
everything I can. It works out better
for everyone that way. It's

The Brussels Four Winds barn is a little less drafty these days as barn board has been erected
at the site, closing in the centre from the elements. This comes after the roof was completed
a few weeks ago. The centre will be home to a year-round location for the Brussels Farmers'
Market, a bakery and restaurant, as well as an event space. This week it was announced that
the barn will be a potential site for the Win This Space competition winner. The competition
was announced earlier this week. (Denny Scott photo)

preferable to not have to move
people around. If you don't get that
perfect match, no one enjoys their
stay and what should be a
memorable experience isn't good for
anyone."
Lynch is responsible for students
in Clinton, Wingham and Listowel
high schools and is looking for
families in those catchment areas to
welcome the students, however
schools across the board participate
including Exeter, Goderich and
Stratford.
"Anyone in the Avon Maitland
District School Board can be a host,"
she said.
Families are compensated for
participation in the program and
students are fully insured.
Students require a bedroom and
have to be at school, Lynch said,
where she will contact them twice a
month to see how the program is
going. The program has students
stay for the fall semester then head
home.
"I stay in contact with the families
as well to try and support both them
and the students," she said.
The program allows students to
experience school in North America
but also allows them to experience
Ontario and Canada, Lynch said.
"We have trips through the school
board," she said. "Generally they are
to Niagara Falls or Toronto where
students visit the landmarks like
the CN Tower and Ripley's
Aquarium."
Lynch said with the International
Plowing Match (IPM) in Walton this
fall, it will definitely play a part
in the students' experience.
When the snow starts to fly, the
students and families are encouraged
to take advantage of it so students
can experience skating, Lynch said,
as well as other winter activities that
may not be available to them in their
home countries.
"We have so many wonderful
things right around the corner from
this area," she said. "They can see
Lake Huron for example, when they
show up in September, then see it in
the winter, which is quite a
difference"
All the students are thankful for
the experience, Lynch said,
especially the Brazilian ones.
