PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON
Dining out
Graeme Craig, right, of Walton was one of the lucky diners who enjoyed some smoked pork
chops at the Winthrop Community Ball Park on July 6. The pork chop dinner, a fundraiser for
the site, was put on by volunteers like, from left: Trish McLellan, Amy McClure and Kyla

Local family hosts Madill prom
The off-site prom for the
graduates of Madill was held at the
farm of Tim Fritz. It was organized
expertly by Daniel Fritz.
Some of the group gathered on
Friday for the decorating
of the lovely tent on site
for the party.
Many of the attendees brought in
campers and tents and stayed on site
for the event.
The coach buses arrived to pick up
the excited group and it was off to
Goderich to the beach for pictures
and then back again to party.
It was by ticket only, wristbands
required and adult supervision
on site. There were over 100 in
attendance and the group had a great
time. Lots of music and fun to end
school and kick off a summer of
work and then to college or
university in the fall.
Good bye high school!

An exciting and interesting event
happened around the Brussels area
on the weekend. The Radar Circle
Region of the Historical Automobile
Society of Canada held their annual
family weekend and picnic. The
hosts were Don and Susan McNeil
and family and their base camp was
at the Dave Smith Retreat.
The campers started to arrive on
Friday evening to camp and enjoy a
barbecue, followed by entertainment
by Haley McNeil, daughter of Dan
and Jen.
Saturday morning they enjoyed a
continental breakfast supplied by the
campers and then started their day's
tour. They went to Ron and Betty
McCallum's for a tour of Ron's
collectibles. They enjoyed lunch of
beef on a bun and tarts supplied by
the McCallums. They went to tour
the Cowboy Loft and the Armstrong
Aerodome. They continued to Blyth
to tour Everett Hessel's antique cars.
They returned to Brussels and
viewed the construction of the Four
Winds Barn, Brussels Dam and then
Council surprised by nuclear waste report
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
With the news earlier this month
that Central Huron was out of the
running as a Nuclear Waste
Management Organization (NWMO)
deep geological repository site,
councillors said they were just as
surprised as the public.
Mayor Jim Ginn spoke to the issue
at council's July 4 meeting, saying
that the organization's decision came
as "quite a surprise" to him and his
fellow councillors.
He said he was dismayed to come
out of a meeting with NWMO
representatives with very few
answers. He said the representatives
told him there was a lack of
support for the project in Central
Huron.
Whether that meant from council
and staff or from the general public,
he wasn't sure, but Ginn said he had
few answers about the municipality
being dismissed as a candidate to
pass along to residents.
Central Huron was not the only
community dropped from the
process during this most recent
phase, he said, as the Township of
White River was also removed from
AD CENTRA
the running as a host of the site.
There are three communities that
remain in the running for the
site: Ignace, Blind River and Elliot
Lake.
The organization's press release
stated that NWMO would continue
its field activities in those
communities, while also engaging
with the municipal, First Nation and
Metis communities.
FROM WALTON
went to see Don McNeil's shop.
They returned to the campground
and parked their cars in a circle for
an aerial photo taken by Bruce
Armstrong. They then enjoyed a
catered meal by Peter and Terry
Grey. The evening concluded with
fireworks provided by Dave Smith.
The Sunday morning breakfast for
the near 60 people in attendance was
provided by the McNeils and was
enjoyed by all.
The McNeil family had a
wonderful weekend hosting the car
event for the region. Their family
also enjoyed a great family time
together even though it involved the
organizing and the work. The four
granddaughters of Don and Susan
spent hours fishing at the pond and
were so excited to be catching fish!
They also had grandson Dylan
McNeil and girlfriend Jessica
McNichol stop for prom pictures
with the Little Red Antique Truck.
The pair were attending the off-site
prom for the Grade 12 graduates of
F.E. Madill. I am sure everyone
would enjoy the exciting weekend
organized by Don and Susan.
Congrats to all!
