Final schedule set for Blyth 140th anniversary event
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
The final schedule for the Blyth
140th Anniversary event is taking
shape as, after a meeting last week,
some of the final details were put
into place.
Blyth 140th Committee Chair
Crystal Taylor filled the Blyth
Business Improvement Area (BIA)
executive in on the plans for the
event during the BIA's July 5
meeting.
Taylor reiterated information that
was provided by a fellow committee
member to The Citizen last week,
saying that due to a double -booking,
the band that had been secured for
the evening of July 29 for a dance
was now unavailable that night.
Friday evening the Huron County
Health Unit will be hosting a family -
friendly, smoke-free movie night at
the Blyth Lions Park (inclement
weather will result in a venue change
to the Blyth Community Centre).
Taylor explained the movie would
be The Lego Batman Movie and that
snacks at the event would be

Friday, July 28 is Cenotaph Day
and, to celebrate, the Blyth Legion
and Legion Ladies Auxiliary will be
participating in the rededication of
Memorial Hall starting at 6:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Blyth Cowbell
Brewing Company will have its new
chef, Alexandre Lussier, at the Blyth
Lions Park preparing food. Lussier
will be on-site from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
During that same time, the
scavenger hunt will be held
downtown and local historian and
North Huron Councillor Brock
Vodden will be hosting a special
historical display at the former home
of Sharon's Cars in Miniature at 432
Queen Street.
Saturday evening, a dinner will be
held at the Blyth and District
Community Centre featuring
Pineridge barbecue chicken. Taylor
reported that quarter chicken dinners
will cost $18 while children's meals
will be $5.
Sunday will feature a church
service starting at 11 a.m. and a
picnic following at noon.
A new addition to the day is that
the Blyth United Church Women
(UCW) group will be providing
desserts for the picnic.
After that, an afternoon of family
games is planned according to
Taylor.
Blyth BIA ministerial
representative Gary van Leeuwen
stated that the Byth Christian
Reformed Church would provide
coffee, and Taylor said the Legion
Ladies Auxiliary would help by
providing styrofoam cups.
STREETFEST
Changes are also occurring that
weekend as the Blyth Streetfest has
missed out on part of its namesake
by being moved onto the sidewalk.

Kolkman resigns from BIA
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
Lissa Kolkman, representative of
the Blyth branch of the Canadian
Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC)
and the Friends of the Village
Gardening Group, resigned from the
Blyth Business Improvement Area
(BIA) recently.
During the BIA's July 5 meeting,
Kolkman's resignation was received
and accepted by the executive with
regrets, according to Chair Rick
Elliott, who went on to say it would
be nice to find two representatives to
replace Kolkman, one for each
organization she had represented.
GOLDEN TICKET
The BIA's Golden Ticket
fundraising tickets are now available
at locations throughout the village.
Tickets for the fundraising raffle,
which offers one winner two tickets
to each of the main stage
performances of the Blyth Festival
next year alongside gift certificates
for local businesses, were delivered
to the BIA last week according to
organizer Peter Gusso.
Tickets cost $2 each and can be
found at many merchants' locations
on Blyth's main street.

Streetfest committee chair Irene
Kellins provided an update to the
BIA during the same July 5 meeting,
saying that, due to unforseen
complications, there would be no
fencing available for the event.
Originally, the July 29 event was
to be held in parking spaces on the
east side of Queen Street in Blyth's
downtown core, however due to the
lack of fencing, the vendor space has
been moved to the sidewalk of the
street.
Kellins also reported that local 4-
H clubs would be providing
children's activities in front of the
Blyth Corner Cafe. The Streetfest
committee has also reached out to
the Huron County Library and
invited the organization to provide
children's activities at its Blyth
branch.
Kellins said the event will begin at
noon with set-up taking place
at 10 a.m.

Brethren, the time is short!
(James Smith, "Refreshment for the Saviour's Flock at Eventide!" 1871)
"Brethren, the time is short!" 1 Corinthians 7:29
Our time below is brief and uncertain --and therefore very precious. Let
us employ it,so as to improve it. Let us live for God and eternity!
The time is short --oh, who can tell
How short his time below may be;
Today on earth, his soul may dwell,
Tomorrow in eternity!
"So teach us to number our days --that we may apply our hearts unto
wisdom." Psalm 90:12
