Blyth native, husband take over Brussels funeral home
Under new management
Blyth native Zoellyn Onn and her husband Thom Chisholm
have taken over the Schimanski Funeral Home in Brussels
and are renaming it Riverside Funeral Home. Shown above
in front of some recently tended -to green space at the front
of the funeral home, the couple have some changes in mind
for the facility and hope to restore it to its original
appearance. (Denny Scott photo)
At the Branch
Volunteers sought
for fastball tourney
It was a schedule of activities
around the Branch this past
weekend. A few folks have dropped
into the Branch to pick up their
prizes and we thank them. The list
is there of winners and your prize
can be picked up with ID.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had nine tables of players hoping
to take home first prize. The high
score of 74 points was earned
by Mae and Lillian Appleby for first.
Second prize went to Anne Laidlaw
and Joyce Hodgins with
72 and third prize went to John and
Iola Subject with 67 points. The lone
hand prize went to Hazel
McGonigle and Janet Davies
with four and the low prize went to
Bruce and Carol Hoelscher with
45 points. Euchre is every two
weeks.
The Sunday night dance had a
nice crowd of almost 70 enjoy the
music of the Tri Country band. The
new schedule for the remainder of
the year is out with a few changes.
The night was looked after by
Mary Bradshaw, our community
volunteer, Judy Lee and Jo -Ann
McDonald and Deb Cann as the
trusty bartender. Thanks all for a
good job.
Comrades are reminded to keep a
little time open for the cooking
duties at the fastball tournament on
the July 28-30 weekend. Many
hands make light work and then no
one needs to work more than one
shift. This is just another fundraising
venture for the Branch in our
continuing efforts to complete our
accessibility funding.
The Ways and Means committee
has more projects in the planning
stages for the year including another
gift card draw, wing nights, trivia
night and more.
Congratulations to our bartender
Sandra Josling and member Jim
Brown who were married on
Saturday. They are on holidays for
the next week so you may not see
them around!

The Citizen
Zoellyn Onn and Thom Chisholm
have taken over the Schimanski
Funeral home in Brussels as of
earlier this week and, aside from
renaming it to Riverside Funeral
Home, the couple have some
changes in mind for the location.
Onn, who originally hails from
Blyth, and Chisholm, of Toronto,
have purchased the funeral home
and, as of Monday, were open for
business.
The funeral home and attached
living quarters represent an
opportunity that Onn said likely
wouldn't come around again.
"I love the community and I love
the area and this kind of chance to
come back and help in the
community is something I couldn't
pass up on," she said. "It's definitely
something that I had to take
advantage of."
Onn, who moved to Toronto to
pursue an acting career, found
herself looking for something
different several years ago and,
through a friend's literary
endeavours, found an interest in
becoming a funeral director.
She worked in Toronto and has
worked at Falconer Funeral Homes
in Clinton in the past. Onn has been
in her field for a decade.
"I love working with people and
I'm empathetic so I looked at
becoming a funeral director," she
said. "I love being able to help
people and be of service."
Onn also started an embalming
business.
As for why she got into the funeral
business, Onn said that it likely
started when her mother passed
away 15 years ago.
"When my mom passed away, I
had to deal with mortality," she
explained. "I wasn't dealing with
just hers, but my own and the people
around me. It led me on this path,
but it wasn't until several years after
that I decided to pursue it as a
career."
Onn said her mother's funeral,
which involved bringing the casket
to her parents' home near Blyth and
having a celebration on the lawn
around the casket, was a progressive
service and the kind of thing she

The days of summer are such fun.
Kids are free to do what they do
best, parents are a little more relaxed
and neat opportunities are all over
the place. Getting the details down is
the hardest part.
Next Monday, July 17 is the start
of the fun at the Mennonite Church.
The area churches, Brussels
Ministerial, work together to pay for
the Kintail Team to set the tone for
the volunteers who help with the
children. Stories, games, projects
and food are all linked to the theme
for the week. Props like skeletons
and lab equipment have been found
suggesting an intriguing week. So
take your young friends for the week
of fun and new friends. More
volunteers are always welcome.
Is the pool part of your summer?
Several time spots are available for
the grown-up crew of community.
Admission of $4 will get you a shot
at aerobics or lane swims or just
puddling. Exercise times are
Monday, Wednesday and Friday
from 1 to 2 p.m. or a regular swim
Tuesday and Thursday from 4 to 5
p.m. As well, lane swimming is at 8
a.m. For $50 you can attend them all
and for $75 you get a season's pass
for all the pool time scheduled fun.
So check it out, it's here, it's
convenient, it's good for you and it's
a bargain.
Phil and Lauren have been home
this week, first to celebrate the
Richmond and Rapson wedding,
then to check on family and friends
and on to do a little sightseeing. It's

good to hear another perspective on

bountiful place we call home —
lovely vegetation, healthy farms,
barn quilts and local produce. Big

Uncle Bob and Aunt Barb was the
last stop before they flew back to
Edmonton with lots of new
memories.
Be sure to make time this summer
to hear music some afternoons and
evenings in the parks at several
towns around us. It's fun.
Summer theatre is in full swing,
there is a show just for you be it in
Blyth, Grand Bend, Drayton or
Stratford. So many plays, so little
time. Get your tickets.
The Brussels Fiddle Jamboree,
sponsored by the Lions Club, is on at
1 p.m. at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre. Join the
fun for a time to be with community,
share some food and get your toes
tapping.
Take time to appreciate the
greenery in our midst and think
where we'd be without it.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
