Hoonaard recounts `building'
Lauren Hoonaard
By Lauren Hoonaard
It sure doesn't seem like 10 years
ago when we first began as little
builders! It has been quite a project,
but we are finally at the end of
building. We have had good, sunny
days on the construction site and
bad, rainy days as well, but through
sun, rain or snow, on most days, we
showed up each day and didn't give
up! And through it all, we always
kept in mind the foundation of our
building and of our lives: Jesus
Christ.
When we first arrived at the
construction site in 2007 we were
greeted by Foreman Soer. She made

have had many accomplishments. To
begin with, the track team did well
with many athletes moving on from
regionals to districts and setting new
personal bests. Our soccer and
volleyball teams trained very hard
and had successful seasons.
This year both boys and girls
basketball teams trained long and
hard with the girls and boys getting
first in their year-end tournaments.
In addition to our sports teams, we
had many different clubs reach their
goals, such as the drama club. The
actors and actresses practised many
days a week and performed a
comedic play at the Sears festival,
earning lots of laughs from the
audience.
This year the Mustangs Making a
Difference participated in a
fundraiser to help get clean water to
people that didn't have access to it.
They set an initial goal of $500, but
did so well the first week, they
bumped the goal up to $1,000. They
then proceeded to get nearly twice as
much as that! So, I guess you could
say that all of the students around us
are extremely talented.
All of the graduates should be
proud of all that they have
accomplished in our Grade 7 and 8
years. I hope that all of you use this
year's successes to reach your goals
next year, not only in your extra-
curriculars but in your high school
career as well. Famous coach, Vince
Lombardi once said, "The greatest
accomplishment is not in never
falling but in rising again after you
fall."
The accomplishments of Madill's
students prove that we know how to
work as a team and family. And, like
any other family, we have many
good memories that we shared with
each other.
Many of us participated in the
colour run — so many in fact, that the
walls and floor were coated with
colour. (Sorry custodians, but we
had a great time!)
We all enjoyed our trip to Celtic,
where we bonded with the people in
our cabin and the counsellors who
worked hard for us to enjoy
ourselves. Many of us went for a dip
in the grotto, and many of us
regretted it once we felt how cold it
was! The games, campfires, skits
and songs were awesome and
memorable. Most people were in a
club or team of some kind, and we
all enjoyed the talks and laughs we
had with our teammates and fellow
club members.
As you can
see, we all
experienced an amazing year, and
we'd like to thank the people who
made it all possible. First, our
families — we would like to thank
you for helping us with our
homework, driving us to our sports
and clubs, and supporting us when
we need it.
Next: the teachers. Without our
amazing teachers we wouldn't have
been able to go to Camp Celtic or
participate in the Grade 7/8 sports
and clubs. Not only did these
teachers give us amazing memories,
but they gave us an amazing
education. We all know Grade 8
students aren't perfect listeners, but
they stuck by us and kept teaching.
Now we are all here, graduating into
high school!
The year seemed to fly by, but the
beginning seems so far away. When
I think about how much we have all
grown, it seems impossible that we
have all changed and learned so
much in just 10 months.
So our advice to all the graduates
is to keep growing, keep changing,
keep making mistakes and learning
from them, try new things and
somewhere along the way, discover
yourself. It's not who you are that
holds you back, it's who you think
you're not.
And remember, education is key.
The true goal of education is
intelligence blended with character.
We are working on both. Whoever
and whatever you decide to be, we
wish you luck on your journey
and hope you all enjoy high
school and whatever lies beyond
that for you.
us feel very welcome in our new
environment and taught us the basics
for our future building. We all got
introduced to each other but did not
all get along right away.
Construction builder Soer must of
had an awful time with us with all
the fighting! Joshua seemed to think
it was alright to hit Emma in the
head with toys and Ally went around
poking Josh in the back. Maybe
spending so much time together
wasn't such a good idea at the
beginning, but as we planned the
blueprints for our building, we
became closer each day.
We began building our first floor
with Foreman Vanwyk by our sides.
Our team basically doubled in size
that year because we were put with
an older group of builders. Sam
joined us this year as well. While
building our first floor, we reviewed
a lot of the basics for building and
started learning some more complex
skills.
Floor two was a very interesting
year! Foreman Huls was our
supervisor while this floor was being
built! Foreman Huls had a lot of
experience; he was even working as
a foreman when some of our parents
were junior builders! And he always
mixed up our names, so in return, he
would give us a cracker! Sometimes,
when he ran out of crackers, he
would find other candy to share with
us!
Foreman Huls must not have
wanted us to continue our project
without him, because he led us again
for floor number three. We must
have shown progress, because this
year, we were put in with a group of
younger builders! Our group
continued to grow as Josh Goudy
joined us too. There was a lot of
fooling around on the construction
site this year. During lunch break
one day, Sam decided it would be
funny to put staples in Meghan's
yogurt! Ever since, Meghan has had
a fear of staplers. There sure have
been some crazy moments here on
the construction site!
Floor four was a big year for us
builders. We were back with the
older group of builders and that must
have been too much for one foreman
to handle, because we had two!
Foreman Dejager and Foreman
Frielink were our supervisors this
year.
Foreman Deboer was with us for
floor five. Foreman Deboer was a
little strict, but he always enjoyed
joking around with us! We had a lot
of fun this year with multiple
projects and many new things to
learn.
Foreman Deboer joined us again
for floor six. We continued to work
hard and as a reward we got to take a
break and travel to the Toronto Zoo.
During the long bus ride home,
Meghan and Emma kept singing
their made-up Smeagol song over
and over and over. That sure was a
long ride home! I'm sure Foreman
Deboer was ready for us to move on
after two years of work with us!
Foreman Scott was with us for
floor number seven and Makayla
joined us this year as well. Foreman
Scott made it clear that this year
there would be no coughing, no
burping, no yawning, and no fiddle -
farting around on the construction
site! Although there were a lot of
rules that year, we had a lot of fun
and even got to take a break from
building and travel to Ottawa and
Montreal! For our first night, we
stayed in Ottawa. But not in any
regular hotel, we stayed in a jail!
As much fun as it was, us girls got
a little freaked out after Ally read us
a ghost story from the book
"Haunted Canada" about the jail we
were sleeping in! Apparently it was
haunted! Then, at around 1 a.m. Sam
came up the stairs and yelled "Who
wants Bugles? 50 cents a Bugle!"
What a night that was!
Although our sleeping
arrangements weren't exactly ideal,
we all had a super fun time that first
night! The next day we did more
exploring in Ottawa and then headed
to Montreal. We got to see many
different things, such as the
Canadian War museum, the
Canadian Art Gallery and St.
Joseph's Oratory. At the end of this
floor being built, we said goodbye to
the older group of builders, who
moved onto the next step in their
lives.
Foreman Vandenboogaard joined
us for our final year at the
construction site, as well as Brooke.
The eighth floor was as new to him
as it was to us, considering this was
Mr. V's first year as a foreman. If
you were to walk onto the
construction site this year, you
probably would have heard a lot of
singing. Besides Joshua and
Makayla, I think we could all agree
that most of us aren't the best
singers. But when we do sing,
everyone joins in! Mr. V sometimes
even sings with us!
And when we're not working, and
well, sometimes even when we are,
we are almost always talking and
laughing. And when Meghan starts
to laugh, we all laugh louder because
sometimes she sounds like a seagull
when she laughs! Mr. V always joins
in the fun too when we play games
like grounders and capture the flag
after a long day of work.
Our crew is rather small — only 13
of us — but since we are a smaller
