(Denny Scott photo) By Denny Scott The Citizen Just prior to Canada celebrating its 150th anniversary on Saturday, Huron -Bruce MP Ben Lobb recognized dozens of Huron County residents for their efforts by awarding them Commemorative Canada 150 medals. Lobb, at the Wingham Knights of Columbus Centre on June 28, explained that the medals are for those who demonstrate strength of character, respect and other positive attributes while at the same time give back to their communities. In The Citizen's readership area, many residents were recognized for their efforts. Doug McArter of Brussels received a medal for his time serving his community through the Brussels Optimist Club, Blyth/Brussels Minor Hockey, an organizer for the Terry Fox Run and being involved local fastball teams and tournaments. Brussels' Joe Seili was honoured for his contributions to economic development. Being self-employed in the agri-business field for nearly 40 years, Seili has helped foster business in Brussels and has also served on municipal council for 16 years including two terms as mayor. Seili is also a member of the Brussels Optimist Club. Steven Sparling of Blyth received his medal for his commitment to the village, his leadership and his lifetime of support for economic sustainability. Sparling retired as CEO of Sparlings Propane in 2016 and is now the CEO of the Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company in Blyth. Sparling has contributed to the Canadian Centre for Rural Creativity, the Blyth Emergency Services Training Centre and the Huron County Economic Development Board, all designed to benefit the communities he supports. Helen Craig of Walton was awarded a medal for her selfless commitment to the community, according to Lobb. A lifelong resident of Huron County, Craig's involvement in the Walton Women's Institute was noted as was her work with the Special Olympics, the 4-H program and her time as a member of the United Church Women in Walton. She is currently part of the efforts behind the 2017 International Plowing Match in Walton. Maxine Seers, now of Goderich but previously of Auburn, received a medal for her commitment to Auburn. She is a lifelong member of the Auburn Horticultural Society which she currently serves as President for and was recently recognized as an outstanding member of the Ontario Horticultural Association's District 8.
