A NOTE FROM BETTY

Oh Canada! Wow and wow!
There's nothing like a bit of
patriotism and a few flags flyting to
make you stop and think about our
land. Reading and watching news
media over the weekend made it
clear how special Canada really is,
from sea to sea to sea. We are a
beautiful mosaic.
We all have family stories of how
our people arrived — mine from
Sligo, Ireland, others from
Holland, Pakistan, Somalia, India -
meet people and the world becomes
smaller.
Seeing the celebrations happening
in Halifax and Yellowknife and
Victoria was a visual connection
to the people of our vast land. We
were all immigrants at one time.
Another wow. People sharing their
stories of long ago and this
year. Each story told of others
giving them a helping hand and

people during the event, which also included a fundraising draw. From left: Catrina Josling,

At the Branch
Legion holds Canada 150 event
By Jo -Ann McDonald
The general meeting for June at
the Brussels Legion Branch was
held Last Tuesday evening with
President Jamie Mitchell leading the
way. He introduced the chairs of the
committees. Some are returning
with a few new ones: Sports chair,
Ron Schmidt; Track and Field, Judy
Lee; Canteen, Andy Overholt with
Jamie Mitchell; Seniors and
Veterans Service, Mabel Glanville;
House chair, Glenn Bridge with
helpers Deb Ross and Jim Brown;
Youth and Bursary, Nanci
Ducharme; Padre, Sandra Cable;
Poppy, Sandra Josling; Cadet
Liaison, Lisa Glanville; Catering
and Honours and Awards, Jo -Ann
McDonald and Membership, Greg
Wilson. Jamie wishes to add an
Entertainment Chair to his list and if
anyone is interested in being on the
committee, they are asked to call the
Branch and leave word and Jamie
will contact you. Comrade George
Adams presented a gavel he has
made to Comrade Jo -Ann
McDonald for her years of
dedication and service to the
Branch. There will be only executive
meetings in July and August.
The Branch will be doing the food
booth at the Tigers tournament so
leave some time on the weekend of
July 28, 29 and 30 to help out. The
sign-up sheet is at the Branch. Call
Sandra or she will call you!
The Branch had many of the
Comrades busy for a couple of days
this week. There was a crew at the
Farmers' Market selling tickets for
the 150th anniversary draw.
Comrades Deb Cann, George
Adams, Cecil Moore, Mabel
Glanville and Jo -Ann McDonald did
a great job!
Happy Canada Day festivities had
a fish fry at the Branch and fed 100
people and then held the 150th draw.
The fish fry had Comrades Jim
Brown, Chris Brown, Murray Lowe,
Catrina Josling and Barrie Currie
looking after the cooking outside.
Comrades Deb Cann and Jo -Ann
McDonald looked after the indoor
duties. Glenn Bridge worked the
door. The draw was conducted by
Sandra Josling, Eric Ross and Jamie
Mitchell. Winners included Brian
Schlosser, Paul Machan, Isabelle
Wheeler, David Blaney, Dianne
Sidders, Lloyd Cooper, Andy
Overholt and John Lowe.
We send our get -well wishes to
Comrade Adam Smith who has
suffered a serious fall and is in a
London Hospital.
We hope he is recovering and will
be home soon.

Canadian way. Bye now, Betty G.W.
An article in the Toronto Star by
Alex Ballingall gave me a couple of
new tidbits. He uses the Trans
Canada Trail as his story base,
walking 260 kilometres of it
from Niagara -on -the -Lake to
Toronto. It runs for 22,000
kilometres from east to west.
Alex lives in British Columbia, so
the flat farmland was new to him.
He very soon realized that we
are an open and caring people
wherever we live. He writes that he
found a "communitarian spirit"
where we just know that to survive
and thrive, we need to see
community as more important
than our individual needs. Like in
our own communities, we see a
need and offer to help. Oh
yes, community spirit is very
important.
The other point that was new to
me was that the Indigenous folks had
a confederation as early as 1142. The
Haudenosaunee territory, the base of
Six Nations that we know, was
looking after things much before the
white settlers arrived and messed
with their world. So as we hear the
Truth and Reconciliation Report,
stories can be heard and amends
made. It took generations to break
our promise/treaties and so we need
to methodically make things right.
We are now trying the communitian
thing, I hope.
Fireworks are always a great way
to note a special occasion, so thanks
to Cody and Katie and their July 1
wedding, our Canada Day fireworks
