Beating the runner As part of a warm-up for the team's drive towards the World Championship, the Aussie Steelers, a softball team from Australia, played double-header exhibition games against the Brussels Tigers on Monday night. This isn't the first time the two squads have faced off as Ty Sebastian, who travelled to Australia to play, provided a connection for his two teams. Unfortunately for the hometown crowd, the Steelers players proved they belonged at the world championship, posting two convincing wins over the Tigers. CLEAN UP When cleaning up after a flood, minimize contact with floodwater or anything that was in contact with the floodwater and keep children away from contaminated areas. Follow these steps for a safe clean-up: • Prepare for the cleanup by gathering necessary supplies including gloves, N95 masks, rubber boots, goggles, soap, pails, dehumidifiers and wet/dry vacuums. • Vent the affected areas by opening windows and doors. • Remove water, mud and other debris including standing water, dirty material, debris, soil and residual mud. • Use soap and water to clean all affected areas. • Ensure all cleaned areas are allowed to dry as quickly as possible. • Dispose of household items that cannot be dried within 48 hours as anything that takes longer has greater potential for mould growth. • Items such as insulation, drywall, carpets, particleboard furniture, beds, toys and cushions that have had contact with flood waters and cannot be dried should be discarded. • Clean and dry out your house and salvageable possessions using fans, heaters and dehumidifiers to speed up the drying process and prevent mould growth. • Vacuum surfaces that are dry and/or have not been directly affected by the flood waters with a HEPA vacuum cleaner. County CAO Orchard resigns By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Brenda Orchard, who has served as Huron County Chief Administrative Officer for the past two and a half years, is leaving the county as of Aug. 2. Orchard officially announced her resignation at Huron County Council's June 21 committee of the whole meeting after a lengthy closed -to -the -public session. With tears in her eyes she told councillors and members of the public in the gallery that she had been commuting from Kingston to Goderich for some time and that it was now time for her to take the next step in her life and in her career. Orchard will now assume the CAO position at Lennox and Addington later this summer. After making her announcement, Orchard had high praise for council and Huron County staff. "This is the best job I've ever had and this is the best council I've ever had and this is absolutely the best senior staff that I've ever had," she said, adding that she was proud of the changes that had been made at the county during her time, including efforts to increase transparency and staff reporting to council. "This is magic," she said of Huron County. "This is the way it's supposed to be "" After making her emotional announcement, Orchard advised council of the next steps in the process, saying that a transition and hiring committee should be appointed and an interim CAO should be appointed for August until a new permanent CAO is hired. Warden Jim Ginn, Past -Warden Paul Gowing, Huron East Mayor Bernie MacLellan and South Huron Mayor Maureen Cole were appointed to serve on the hiring committee with a bylaw appointing an interim CAO due to come to council for its July meeting.
