HE to plant trees in Walton to mark Canada's 150th Huron East is zeroing in on potential ways to mark Canada's sesquicentennial in the municipality. At Huron East Council's June 20 meeting, Chief Administrative Officer Brad Knight discussed the proposal with councillors, saying that he had done some research on the ideas first raised by Councillor Bob Fisher earlier this month. Fisher had proposed perhaps the collection of a time capsule, in addition to the planting of six trees somewhere in the municipality. Five trees would represent each of Huron East's wards with a sixth representing the amalgamated municipality itself. Fisher suggested that they could be planted in a semi- circle with the municipality's tree in the middle. Knight said he felt the Walton Ball Park would be an ideal spot for the tree -planting ceremony. Not only is it a stone's throw from the site of this year's International Plowing Match at the home farm of Jack Ryan and family, but it's rather close to being in the geographical centre of the municipality. Councillors liked the idea and decided to go ahead with the planting of several native species of trees there (five of one species and one of another). Councillor John Lowe suggested that given the importance of the project to councillors, it might be nice if councillors paid for the trees out of their own pockets, rather than using the municipality's money and councillors agreed. Public Works Director Barry Mills estimated that the total cost of the six trees would be between $1,000 and $1,200. While nothing has yet been confirmed, Councillor David Blaney suggested that perhaps the planting of the trees could be incorporated into the closing ceremonies of the IPM. A date for the tree -planting ceremony will be decided at a later date. Another proposal had been to incorporate the placing of the old municipal office bell into the ceremonies. The bell has since been installed in front of the municipal office in Seaforth.
