WALTON

You can all stop hoping for a little
rain! I guess too many asked for
some rain and boy did we get rain!
There have been many numbers
noted from three to nine inches.
Many of the ditches, creeks and
rivers are running very full with the
runoff of rain, so remember to watch
your children and warn them of the
danger of fast moving water.
The farmers are unhappy because
many of the crops underwater will
fail the swimming lessons. White
beans are very tender and can't hold
their breath long, soys are a little
stronger but a couple of days is long
enough under water and the corn
doesn't like wet leaves for long
either. Their tender roots don't want
to be waterlogged for long. Fields
with good tile drainage are being
very appreciated at this time.
The old adage about how to judge
if the corn is doing well or not is
"knee high by July". There are many
fields out there that have made the
mark of knee high but there are still
some a little behind. We hope they
catch up when the hot weather
arrives.
The heavy rains had the water
flowing up and over our laneway
which has happened only about
three times in the last 30 years. At 6
a.m. it was running over the lane, but
by 7:30 a.m. the water had already
receded down into the field. By 9
a.m. the water on the north side of
the lane had drained away, and most
of the water was gone from the south
side of the lane. I noticed many
fields that showed the signs of the
receding water while I was out on
the afternoon ride on Friday.
Our sympathies are extended to
Lawrie Cousins and his children
Murray, Cathy, Nancy and Janette
and their families on the passing of
wife and mother Pieta. Our
condolences are extended to the
Cousins and van Vliet families.
The Brussels ladies birthday group
gathered this past week with about
20 joining to celebrate the June
birthdays. Celebrating with birthday
girls Lois McCutcheon and Edna
were Betty McCutcheon, Rene
Richmond, Laura Barbour, Bev
Palmer, Audrey Cardiff, Betty
Cardiff, Jane Hall, Nelva Scott, Jean
Davidson, Joan Bernard, Nora
Stephenson, Marci Bremner,
Isabelle Wheeler, Merle Cousins,
Betty Campbell, Marie
McCutcheon, Cora Alcock and Dale
Chesher. Happy birthday to all.
Our congratulations to Brussels
resident Tim Lee on being
recognized as a 25 -year volunteer
for Gallery Stratford at the 50th
anniversary celebration barbecue.
Tim grew up in Stratford and at the
age of eight would help out around
the gallery as his mom was the office
manager for nearly three decades.
When he was young he did
everything from decorating to
cleanup for events. Tim now lives in
Brussels with his wife Ronna and
twins Weston and Jack, so he had to
cut back on his volunteering but
returns every year to help with the "I
Love My Gallery Auction". His
mother Christine says he loved to
organize, so he made the perfect
helper. Tim enjoys the creativity and
the expression of art. Tim dabbles in
the art world through his
woodworking but gets into lots of
painting and crafts , like barn board
signs and things for weddings. Tim
doesn't see his volunteering as
anything special but as a way to help
communities. Congratulations Tim!
The 44th annual Craig picnic was
held at the farm of Graeme and
Helen Craig last weekend. They had
around 40 arrive to enjoy the
afternoon of visiting, swimming,
games and food. Everyone had a
good time and they were pleased to
have Isabelle Craig able to attend.
There are three women from our
area dedicating their time and talents
to a good cause at this time. Kathy
Blake, Yvonne Kitchen and Sarah
Baker are helping with the
fundraising cause for the Huron
Residential Hospice. The palliative
care hospice is set to be situated
between Clinton and Goderich on a
property on Highway 8.
Any donations are tax deductible
and can be sent to Huron Hospice
office c/o Clinton Hospital.
Palliative care is improving the
quality of life for those living with or
dying from an advanced illness. It
allows families the support they
need and the residents to have the
support they need when end of life is
approaching.
Someone who has had a family
member in a palliative care facility
out of this area, made the comment

G2G Rail Trail reps
look ahead to bridges

Huron County Council is
supporting the Goderich-to-Guelph
(G2G) Rail Trail in its continuing
quest to acquire funding from the
upper levels of government.
Paul Vandermolen of G2G Inc.
spoke to council at its June 21
committee of the whole meeting and
told council about a pocket of
funding that will provide $42.5
million to support active
transportation projects across the
province. He said that this funding is
the first year of what's being called a
"multi-year" program.
Vandermolen also updated council
on the trail and its progress in the
past year.
He said that first and foremost a
number of bridges had been installed
or were being prepared to be
installed, including the "Blyth
Brook" bridge just west of Blyth that
had received funding from Huron
County.
He also said that plenty of work
has been done on the portion of the
trail that runs between Blyth and
Walton in order to get it upgraded
and ready for traffic.
As for future projects, he said,
there are still four major bridge
projects that remain on the ledger for
the group, several of which are in
Goderich. One of the projects is to
build a bridge over the Maitland
River in Auburn and the other is to
ensure the long-term viability of the
Menesetung Bridge in the Goderich
area.

compassion and "home"
atmosphere made the approaching
end of life a more calming and
peaceful journey. Any help to bring a
hospice to our area would be greatly
appreciated.
Celebrating a milestone was Irene
Blake. She has turned the good age
of 85 and along with her family and
friends enjoyed a lovely day
together. They gathered at Dave
Smith's retreat and had a great
afternoon of visiting, fun and food.
Lots of celebratory wishes and
laughs were had. Happy birthday
Irene!
Returning from their annual
sisters' trip are Leona Armstrong,
Helen MacLean of St. Catharines
and Doris McKinley of London. The
trio went on a mystery bus tour that
took them to Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania where they stayed,
taking sight-seeing trips each day.
Some of the places they visited were
the Fred Rogers Center for Early
Learning and Children's Media
honouring the work of Fred Rogers,
the beloved creator and host of
Mister Rogers' Neighbourhood.
They went to the McCarl Coverlet
Gallery displaying beautiful
Jacquard woven coverlets made in
the 1800s and the historic Saint
Vincent Basilica. They also went to
Quecreek, where nine coal miners
were rescued in 2002 after being
trapped for four days due to flooding
of the Quecreek Mine and to the
Flight 93 National Memorial
dedicated to the 40 people who lost
their lives. The tour ended with a
dinner theatre at Green Gables
restaurant.
Welcome back Leona! Isn't it
wonderful that these three ladies
continue such a wonderful tradition
of getting together each year for
some "sister" time with each other?
We thank Linda McDonald for
sprucing up the Walton Ball Park
building with some new paint. Every
little bit helps to make Walton look
nicer for the International Plowing
Match!
The Smith annual picnic was held
at the home of Lisa Glanville and
Joan Smith. They had about 60
relatives come and go during the day
and about 40 take part in the
delicious potluck meal. A bit of a
rain shower chased them indoors for
awhile, but the sun returned for them
to be out again.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Dianne Godkin,
Wenda Humphries, Carolyn
Sullivan, Nash Banks, Kelly Godkin,
Fletcher Delay, Jill Fritz, Quinn
Driscoll, Kendra Wilts, Nora
Humphries, Stephen Todd, Norah
Schlosser. Happy birthday to all.
