Blyth's Scrimgeours celebrate 50th anniversary Golden anniversary Don and Lenora Scrimgeour recently marked 50 years of marriage. While there have been changes in scenery and job titles, their commitment to one another has remained the same. (Shawn Loughlin photo) HE cuts power use Huron East is keeping its eye on the municipality's energy consumption, conducting its first complete review since 2013. The energy report focused on 2016 rates and consumption compared to the previous year. Chief Administrative Officer Brad Knight said that the most noteworthy development in 2016 was the municipality's drastic decline in power usage. Knight told councillors that the municipality has consistently consumed over four million kilowatt hours per year, while in 2016 consumption declined to 3.53 million. The 13 per cent decline, Knight told councillors, was largely a result of the streetlight LED conversion. Consistently, the four largest consumers of hydro have been recreation, sewage, water and streetlighting. While streetlighting usage declined in 2016 from 18 per cent to 11 per cent, it remains one of the largest consumers of power. While consumption in many facets of the municipality has not changed drastically, hydro costs have, Knight said. However, net hydro costs for the centre increased nearly 19 per cent. He says that while the retail price of power hasn't changed, the global adjustment has increased by 14 per cent. A consistent consumer of power has been the municipality's community centres. For arenas in both Seaforth and Brussels, again consumption has remained steady, but the cost of running the facilities has continued to rise. The net cost to provide power for the Seaforth and District Community Centre, Knight said, has increased by $12,800, or 15.5 per cent in 2016 over the previous year. In order to power the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre, Knight wrote in his report, it costs $200 per day in the winter months, while the Seaforth centre can cost between $300 and $350 per day. Councillors received the report. GRADUATION SHAYNA MELADY graduated from Dalhousie University, Halifax NS on May 31, 2017 with a Bachelor of Science- Health Promotion degree. While they didn't mark the occasion with a special celebration, they were called in front of the congregation of their home church, St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Brussels, to be recognized for the accomplishment. It was on June 10, 1967, just days before Canada's Centennial celebration, that Lenora Ann Hallahan and Don Scrimgeour tied the knot at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Blyth. Lenora, the daughter of William J. Hallahan and Lenora Hallahan of RR3, Blyth, and Don, the son of Everett and Leona Scrimgeour of Blyth, were wed by Father J. F. Kelly. Attendants for the nuptials were Doug Scrimgeour, Raymond Hallahan and Douglas Beninger, who is now deceased, and Marjorie (Hallahan) Church, Margaret (Hallahan) Lyddiatt and Elaine Scrimgeour. Don worked with Dominion stores immediately after the wedding and the couple lived in Hanover. However, they would move to London, Clinton and Seaforth before putting down roots in Blyth. Don worked in Hanover at Dominion stores from 1964 to 1969 and then as the meat manager at Seaforth IGA from 1969 to 1973. In 1973, the couple then took on the Blyth Meat Market in 1973 until 1984 when they opened Scrimgeour's Food Market, which remains a valued community business to this day. When the couple lived in London, Lenora worked as a bank teller and then at Canadian Tire in Seaforth when they first moved to Huron County before co -owning Scrimgeour's with Don. Rental fees waived Continued from page 1 budget because the Blyth 140th celebration is a community event. Newson then warned council that, even with this recommendation, she may be back to discuss the issue again. Councillor Bill Knott said the noise may not be an issue as a problem had arisen with the musical act booked for the celebration and it wouldn't be able to perform. Newson also reported that the Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company had said they would handle a beverage tent for the celebration, however, the company has since said they can't handle the commitment and will be donating a tent but not handling beverages, further changing Newson's recommendation which called for council to recognize the company's efforts to allow for a special occasion liquor licence. "We could be back with more discussion if the... noise bylaw issue finds its way," she said. "We're unable to get confirmation of everything at the event." In the end, council approved a motion that will waive a tent permit, use of the arena pad and use of the upstairs hall if necessary. Newson said if the organization utilizes all waived fees, the total amount saved would be $1,178.72 by the event committee. 7- mana-ke loop Make Your Own Beer, Wine, Coolers and Fruit Wine (c rery here or at home!)
