North Huron approves new positions for FDNH By Denny Scott The Citizen The Fire Department of North Huron will be seeking two new hires to help fill out the station and make the Emergency Services Training Centre (ESTC) a success. In a review presented to North Huron Township Council on Monday night, FDNH Chief Ryan Ladner and outgoing Chief Administrative Officer Sharon Chambers presented a report highlighting the needs of the department. The report outlined the need for an Assistant Chief/Vice Principal of the ESTC to bring more training business to the site. The new position would report to Ladner, but not be connected to the governance of the fire department, according to a proposed organization chart. The Assistant Chief/Vice Principal and Fire Prevention Officer contract employee would result in a salary/benefits increase of $29,499.54 according to Ladner's report. Ladner, in the report, said the position would pay $64,350 per year with $19,305 in benefits, however that would be offset by the fact that the ESTC recently declined to renew an administrative assistant who was Hanging out Aside from the rain over the weekend, warmer weather has prevailed which suits students at Hullett Central Public School just fine. Shown above are Elektra Kalos Vernardatos, left, and Natalie McClinchey on the monkey bars during recess late last week. (Denny Scott photo) s' AD CENTR paid $36,348 with $10,904 in benefits and the fact that the Fire Prevention Officer contract employee would cost $12,592 plus $2,130.09 in benefits, approximately $35,000 less each year than the contract North Huron had with Morris-Turnberry for the same project. The recommendation from Ladner and Chambers came both from the former's review of the ESTC and FDNH, but also from a report commissioned by North Huron from KPMG Inc. that reviewed the ESTC and its operating opportunities, which was delivered to North Huron last year. Council was happy to see the project moving forward, however, several comments were made that the new Assistant Chief/Vice Principal, and to some extent Ladner, would be required to produce results. "It's important that we move forward and important to invest in the ESTC," Councillor Trevor Seip said. "I'm not sure the ESTC has had a fair shake with regards to [what] it requires to make it successful. "I've been very adamant... however, that if we're hiring another individual to complement the chief, we have to make sure this person knows their job is... to make the ESTC work. If it doesn't work, they won't be an employee very long." Councillor Bill Knott agreed, saying he welcomes the changes and "looks forward to seeing results shortly, very shortly." Chambers said the issue had been in front of council for some time and she was happy to have it dealt with prior to her departure from the municipality in a few weeks. Council approved a motion that will see an Assistant Chief/Vice Principal brought to the ESTC as well as the contract position for Fire Prevention Officer for North Huron and Ashfield -Colborne- information on Ladner's new Wawanosh filled. direction for the FDNH and the Watch The Citizen for more ESTC.
