(Shawn Lou photo) Park to fully open later in July By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen The new park in Clinton is on a trajectory to be open later next month. Central Huron Council asked for an update on the park at their Monday night meeting, wondering if it would be open for a number of the municipality's upcoming celebrations, including the Mayor's Mingle, scheduled for Wednesday night, the village's Canada Day celebration or the Canada 150 weekend, which is scheduled for July 6-9. Facilities Manager Steve Campbell said that the park's pool would likely still be open for its most -recent projected date of the last day of school. However, the gazebo and skate park will not be ready until July. Councillor Marg Anderson asked when the park was originally slated to be finished and Councillor Dan Colquhoun said the goal had been to open the park on the weekend of May 21, opening day for the Clinton Raceway, which was one of the more generous donors to the park. The plan for the park began when a group of concerned parents approached council and asked for permission to build a skateboarding park. They asked for permission, not for funds, because they planned on raising the money to build the park themselves. The park would eventually get rolled up into other plans, however, when two other groups, independent of one another, approached council about building a new splash pad and playground. Councillors eventually decided to combine all elements into one large new park in Clinton, adding a gazebo and accessible washrooms to better serve the community. While donations and grants were coming in for some aspects of the park, other aspects, namely the skate park, were behind in their efforts and council had originally decided to go ahead with construction of some aspects of the park, but not others. During Central Huron Council's budget deliberations, council decided to fund the remainder of the skateboarding park initiative to ensure that the park would be built together and on time. The facilities staff now hopes the park will be open in its entirety later next month. Central site chosen for OPP Continued from page 1 Turnberry Council meeting that led to a number of letters being written and circulated to Huron County and its lower -tier municipalities. Goderich had made a play for the detachment, making the case that the town was full of amenities and it made sense for an OPP detachment to be located there. This resulted in responses from councillors in other lower -tier municipalities, however, saying that the spirit of the new OPP detachment location was that it be central to the county and Goderich is anything but central. Those letters also pointed to figures suggesting that the roads leading into Goderich, such as Highways 8 and 21, were closed more often in the winter due to unpassable conditions. Those claims insulted Goderich representatives, who suggested bringing the Ministry of Transportation aboard to conduct a full-scale traffic study ahead of the placement of the new OPP detachment. In the end, however, Infrastructure Ontario opted to place the new detachment in a central location within the county. The rationale is similar to the placement of the new Huron -Perth hospice location in Central Huron, saying it's central to the county in both east/west and north/south nature, making it more accessible to all residents of the county.
