Wayfinding signs approved
Wayfinding signage for Wingham,
funded by the success of the
Wingham Homecoming has been
approved by North Huron Council.
The signage will direct visitors
and residents alike to locations
throughout the village and include
the Wingham symbol used by the
Wingham Business Improvement
Area (BIA).
Signs will be colour-coded to
indicate the different types of sites in
the community. Green backgrounds
will designate recreational locations
while blue backgrounds will indicate
cultural and administrative services
like schools, libraries and hospitals.
The signs are proposed for
Josephine Street and will indicate
locations such as the business park,
cemetery, boat launch, playgrounds,
schools and soccer fields.
Signs will be placed near the
intersection of David Street, Victoria
Street, John Street, Park Drive and
North Street.
The total cost of the project is
$8,595.80 with taxes and comes in
under the $10,000 budget that was
set for the project.
Councillor Brock Vodden said the
project was worthwhile, not only

Payton Illman of Grey is a seven-year-old student at North
Woods Elementary School and she recently cut off her
lovely locks for those fighting cancer. Illman made the
decision after seeing coverage of young cancer patients on
TV. This isn't her first charitable endeavour. Just last year
she made bracelets to sell with all the money going towards
the fight against Cystic Fibrosis. She and her sister hope to
do the same again this year. (Photo submitted)

also how it helps members of the

signs were erected in Blyth, he had
several people tell him that due to
the signs they had found locations
they didn't know existed.

An amazing event was hosted by
MPP Lisa Thompson of Huron
Bruce and Mayor Maureen Cole of
South Huron last Thursday evening.
They hosted the event to celebrate
the many remarkable women of
Huron County. This year marks the
150th birthday of Canada, the 150th
anniversary of Ontario joining
confederation and the 100th
anniversary of women earning the
vote in Ontario.
The evening began with a social
time and then words of welcome
from both hosts. Dinner followed
and then the presentation of the
Remarkable Women of Huron
County certificates began. There
were 196 women nominated to
receive the award (with 120 being in
attendance), for their service as
elected officials, community
advocates, entrepreneurs, athletes,
writers, community volunteers,
entertainers and so much more. The
common thread is that they lead by
example and are proud to call Huron
home.
During a break in the
presentations, special guest,
Elizabeth Witmer, former MPP
Minister and now, Chair of the
Workplace Safety and Insurance
Board, gave her address to the those

PIETA COUSINS
It is with great sadness that the
family of Pieta Cousins (van Vliet)
of London and formerly of Brussels
until 1968 announces her passing on
June 16, 2017 at Parkwood Institute,
London.
Pieta will be missed by Lawrie,
her husband of 64 years, and
lovingly remembered by her
children Murray (Paula), Cathy
(Murray Mulcahy), Nancy (Dave
Hessel) and Janette (Ken Ewan).
Sadly, Pieta was predeceased
by her son, Randy in 2007, as well
as her parents, four sisters
and brother.
The van Vliet family settled in
Walton after immigrating to Canada
from Holland in November 1949,
having lived through the war.
Family was the most important
part of Pieta's life. She was a selfless
and supportive mother, and a
devoted and caring grandmother.
Nana dearly loved her many
grandchildren and great-
grandchildren, who will always have
fond memories of their fun times
together. Pieta was the heart of the
family and they drew strength and
love from her presence. She will be
warmly remembered by all of the
lives she has touched over the course
of her well -lived life.
Cremation has taken place and in
keeping with her wishes, there will
be no visitation or formal service. A
private gathering to celebrate Pieta's
life will be held at a later date for her
family and close friends.
As an expression of sympathy,
memorial donations may be made to

assembled. Presentations continued
following her address.
At the conclusion of the evening,
the Walton/Brussels, Seaforth, area

Included in the area photo were

There were others from our area that

IPPERWASH
Written by Falen Johnson & Jessica Carmichael
Directed by Jessica Carmichael
The land of the Kettle and Stony Point people, on the shores
of Lake Huron, is home to traditional medicines and
ceremonial spaces. Expropriated to make way for a military
base, a promise was made that the land would be returned
at the end of the World War II. Now, seventy years later,
the healing has finally begun. Ipperwash is a play about
the ever difficult path to change, the need for wholeness in
healing, and a country's hunger for hope.
