Tie vote pushes back curbside collection decision
The issue of curbside garbage
collection remains unresolved in
North Huron due to the absence of a
council member.
A suggested motion to pursue a
contract that would see curbside
collection in North Huron's urban
areas continue at a weekly rate with
rural areas continuing at bi-weekly
rates was presented to council
Monday night, however the vote to
approve the motion tied, resulting in
The big day
On Tuesday, June 13, the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics made its
way through Huron County. The runners were in Blyth in the late morning, making their way
through the village before heading south to Clinton, then Goderich. The event raises money
for the annual Special Olympics Ontario Provincial Summer Games. Over the past 30 years,
the run has raised more than $35 million for Special Olympics Ontario. (Denny Scott photo)

Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Father's Day
Sunday, June 18 was Marilyn Craig.
Ushering were John Stewart and
Lissa Kolkman. Marilyn Scott was
pianist, Katie Dockstader, choir
director and Reid Button ran the
Power Point.
Cheryl Cronin welcomed
everyone to church and drew
attention to the announcements
printed in the church bulletin with
special mention that there will be no
church service at Blyth United
Church during July. Sunday, Aug. 6
the service will be at 9:30 a.m. This
is the first Sunday of the new time.
Cheryl lit the Christ Candle on the
altar table. The first hymn, "Praise
the Lord With the Sound of
Trumpet" was sung. Cheryl invited
everyone to greet one another.
The call to worship was repeated
responsively and the prayer of
approach was said in unison. The
scripture reading was from Genesis
18: 1-15 and 21: 1-7. Hillary
MacDonald read the Gospel reading
from the Gospel of Matthew 9: 35-
42 and 10: 8-23. Hillary had a copy
of The Citizen and told everyone that
she has found out that The Citizen
was a "must have". You find all
kinds of news for both Blyth and
Brussels in it. The paper is important
to the community, it is like the word
of God, it is up to us to spread the
good news.
The hymn, "I Heard the Voice of
Jesus" was sung. The choir sang the
anthem, "Shine Jesus, Shine".
Hillary's message to the
congregation was "Distraught".
Picking up the phone can be a
dangerous task, you can spend a
long time talking to friends, or it can
be someone selling something.
Prayer can be dangerous too,
sometimes it leaves things on the
edge.
In the scriptures, Jesus is
travelling and preaching in different
towns. He asks His Disciples to pray
for people to come and help them
with the crowds. Jesus asked the

the motion being defeated by
council.
Prior to the vote, Councillor
Trevor Seip stated, as he has
previously, he is not in favour of
weekly collection as it is what he
considers "status quo".
"As a council, we're falling
behind," he said. "Status quo cannot
continue for the services we offer."
Seip then called for a recorded
vote on the motion.
Councillor Bill Knott said he
didn't disagree with Seip, but
pointed to a report from outgoing
Director of Public Works Jeff
Molenhuis, who was not in
attendance at the meeting, that
changes in how garbage collection is
to be handled at the municipal level
are coming in the next several years
from the provincial government.
Knott said this motion would allow
council to deal with the changes
instead of modifying collection
schedules now and then again when
the new directions are handed down
from the province.
The recorded vote saw Reeve Neil
Vincent and Councillors Knott and
Ray Hallahan vote in favour of the
collection agreement while Deputy -
Reeve James Campbell and
Councillors Yolanda Ritesma-
Teeninga and Seip voted against the
motion. In the result of a tied vote,
the motion is defeated.
Councillor Brock Vodden, who
has pushed to maintain weekly
collection until the public can be
educated on alternatives to garbage
such as composting, was absent for
the meeting.
Outgoing Chief Administrative
Officer Sharon Chambers stated that
the motion could be brought back
when there is a full complement of
council to break the tie.
