Molenhuis resigns after short time in Huron
The end of an era
Jeff Molenhuis, centre, was hired jointly by both North Huron and Morris-Turnberry as the first
employee of its shared services project, which would eventually be dissolved. He was
presented to the public by North Huron Reeve Neil Vincent, left, and Morris-Turnberry Mayor
Paul Gowing, right, at a special ceremony in Wingham last year. When the program was
dissolved, Molenhuis was hired on with North Huron, which he has now left for another
municipality closer to his home of Stratford. (Fide photo)

Huron East is looking at hosting a
small event in Seaforth to help mark
Canada's sesquicentennial this July.
Councillor Bob Fisher raised the
issue at council's June 6 meeting,
saying that the municipality hadn't
really planned anything to mark the
anniversary — largely due to the
massive amount of time and effort
being committed to the 2017
International Plowing Match being
held in Huron East.
Fisher suggested the creation of a
time capsule and perhaps a tree -
planting ceremony — specifically he
suggested six trees to be planted in a
semi -circle, five of which would
represent the municipality's five
wards and the sixth would be in the
centre representing the amalgamated
municipality.
Chief Administrative Officer Brad
Knight also said that a cement pad
was being poured in front of the
Seaforth municipal office where the
building's old bell would be placed.
Fisher suggested that an official
dedication of that artifact could also
be part of the ceremony.
While some councillors were
interested in the idea, nothing
official was declared. Staff will
prepare a report on potential
celebration concepts and present it
to council at its June 20 meeting.

Council approved financial
assistance for the Winthrop Ball
Park committee to help improve the
backstop and fencing at the park.
The municipality will provide 50 per
cent funding to a maximum of
$4,700 to be paid for out of the
municipality's Parkland Reserve.
The committee, which is an
official committee of council,
submitted a quotation from Fortress
Fencing that estimates the entire
project will cost just under $9,300.
***
Council accepted the tender of
Kurtis Smith Excavating Inc. in the
amount of $786,316.40 for the
construction of an extension to
Centennial Drive and Duke Street in
Seaforth. Another $102,180 will
have to be paid in tax on the project,
but $540,000 of the cost will be
recovered through the existing
development agreement.

The Moncrieff Hall and ball park
properties may be rezoned from
community facility to agricultural
small holding (AG4) at a future
meeting based on a recommendation
to council.
The recommendation came from
Huron East's Administration
Committee, which advised that due
to a lack of activity and interest in
the hall that it was in the
municipality's best interest to close
the hall and sell the properties.
While a specific meeting had not
yet been determined, the issue will
return at a future meeting, along
with a formal report from staff.

The Huron East/Morris-Turnberry
draft fire agreement has now been
reviewed by the Ontario Fire
Marshal's office. The municipality's
Administration Committee reviewed
a number of changes suggested by
the office.
It is anticipated that the agreement
will be presented to both councils
for approval by the end of the
month.

with North Huron and felt he was
leaving at the right time.
"At the administrative level,
[North Huron Council and staff]
have worked to develop a framework
for long-term infrastructure
planning, put a system in place for
job costing and began to develop
maintenance programs for public
works assets," he said. "With these
elements beginning to materialize
for North Huron, the timing was
appropriate for me to consider this
new opportunity."
While Molenhuis' final day with
the municipality has yet to be set,
Vincent told The Citizen on Monday
that North Huron will have to look to
temporary coverage of Molenhuis'
position.
The resignation comes shortly
after Chief Administrative Officer
Sharon Chambers tendered her own
resignation, leaving significant holes
in the municipality's senior staff
roster.
"North Huron will have to have
temporary coverage for both
positions before we can find
permanent staff members to refill
them," Vincent said.

staffing issues.
