In memoriam 4-H Sheep Club discusses IPM beautification
RYAN, Marianna. Remembering
Marianna Ryan in our hearts on the
5th anniversary of her passing
(June 12, 2012).
Her smiling way and pleasant face,
Are a pleasure to recall.
She had a kindly word for each,
And she died beloved by all.
Some day we hope to meet her,
Some day we know not when,
To clasp her hand in the better
land,
Never to part again.
— Lovingly remembered by Jack,
Monica, Peggy, Joe and Steve.

The second meeting for the South
Huron 4-H Sheep club was hosted at
the Falconer residence on May 14 at
7 p.m. Nineteen out of the 20
members were present.
Members started off by playing a
game of capture the flag to get
warmed up and to get rid of some
excess energy. After the game, the
club went to the Falconers' garage
where the president opened the
meeting with the 4-H Pledge.
Jolande Oudshoorn introduced the
roll call, "Who are you and what
breed is your lamb?"
The leaders then discussed the
beautification contest that will be
held during the International
Plowing Match (IPM) in Walton this
September.
Once all questions regarding the
contest were answered, members
discussed what to do when they
bring their 4-H sheep home. All
sheep require fresh water and food
daily, along with a well -ventilated
pen and clean bedding. This will be
assessed when the leader's visit later
in the year. Next, members
discussed what to look for when
selecting a lamb and how to make
sure it is healthy.
With all of the basics set aside,
members discussed the 4-H Sheep
Invitational, which is usually held at
the Lucknow fairgrounds, but has
been moved to Walton this year to
coincide with the IPM. The new
members were taught how to hold
and show a sheep during a show —
essential knowledge to ensure sheep
don't get loose.
Deb Falconer used the family dog
to show members where to be and
how to hold your lamb while
showing — by standing on its left
side and guiding its chin with your
left hand, giving it a boost with your
right hand on the base of the tail if
necessary.
They then got a bottle fed
lamb to show how to set up
the lamb and brace it for judging.
Earlier in the meeting, members
learned the requirements for their
project and how to properly
complete their yearbook. They
then had a snack and discussed
what they would like for their
Knott questions budget
The draft Wingham Business
Improvement Area (BIA) budget
puzzled North Huron Councillor
Bill Knott at a council's meeting last
month.
The document included an
undefined transfer to reserves as
well as a Consumer Price Index
(CPI) increase to the amount of
money the organization will have
available to it, both of which were
concerns for Knott.
"I don't have a problem with the
[amount of money being requested],
but under the terms of the BIA,
showing a revenue from
membership fees and budgeting
based on a percentage increase isn't
right," he said.
Knott, who is council's
representative on the Blyth BIA,
said that budgets for the
organizations need to be based on
projects.
He said that the $4,000 transfer to
reserves wasn't appropriate if it
didn't have a specific use attached to
it.
"You can have a $10,000 budget
for banners or something else, but
you can't transfer monies raised to
just a regular reserve fund that has
no specific objective," he said. "It
has to be specified."
Economic Development Officer
Connie Goodall said the BIA is
aware of those regulations but the
information wasn't in the budget.
Knott also said the CPI increase
needs to be removed because it
doesn't apply to the BIA's levy.
Council approved the $27,000
budget provided Knott's concerns
were addressed.
next meeting, and the leaders be having pizza with the club, but
agreed to find a farm that milks the date of the meeting is not yet
either sheep or goats. Members will decided.
4-H Quick Risers
mark final meeting
By Emily Bieman
The final meeting of the
Wawanosh 4-H Quick Risers
was called to order at the Auburn
Hall on Friday, June 9 at 7 p.m.
Vice -President Loretta Higgins
opened the meeting with the
4-H pledge and led roll call which
was, "What bread recipe did you
bring to our meeting tonight."
Next, Emily Bieman gave
the minutes for meeting three and
four. Leader Eileen George told
members what to look for in
judging baked goods. Members
were given some time to judge a
class of doughnuts. After, leader
Cathy Drennan gave the official
placings.
Then the club played a game of
trivia that tested their knowledge on
baking bread.
Prizes were awarded to the
successful winners: Loretta
Higgins, Emily Bieman,

Pastor Dow receives provincial recognition
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Ernest Dow, the long-time pastor
of Blyth's Living Water Christian
Fellowship, has been recognized for
his efforts as part of the pro-life
movement.
Dow was the subject of a special
presentation on Sunday at his
church, where he was presented the
Pro -Lifer in Action Award for
District 2 of the Alliance for Life
Ontario. The district includes much
of southwestern Ontario, spanning
from parts of Wellington County to
Owen Sound, including all of Huron
County and beyond.
Brenda Sjaarda, an East
Wawanosh resident who is the
president of Wingham Right to Life,
made the presentation. Dow says it's
likely the presentation would have
been made at the organization's
annual gala dinner in May, but he
had other church commitments in
western Canada that day and was
unable to attend.
Sjaarda said that the Wingham
chapter nominated Dow for the
award because members felt he was
a "wonderful and worthy" candidate
for the award.
Dow says he was completely
surprised and honoured by the
award, although he says he doesn't
feel entirely deserving of it.
Other members of the committee
in Wingham, he said, put in more
hours and are more dedicated to the
cause, but he's proud to receive the
award.
Dow says that he and his wife
Yvonne's pro-life efforts began
in the late 1980s and have
persisted in the decades that have
followed, advocating for many
issues pertaining to all aspects of
pro-life, spanning from embryos to
the physician -assisted suicide
debate.
In an interview with The Citizen,
Dow said that there are fundamental
beliefs that are part of his faith that
help reinforce his views on the pro-
life movement.
For more information about the
organization, find the Wingham and
District Right to Life group on
Facebook.
