PAGE 9. 11111th INTERNATIONAL Raceway welcomes hopefuls S; RIIRhI EXP Pitter patter It was a landmark day for those working to bring the International Plowing Match to Huron County this year, as the crew marked 100 days to the match with a special event in Wingham. The organizers welcomed Nathan Dales, who plays Daryl on the hit show Letterkenny, and Dylan Playfair, also known as Reilly on the show. Plenty of people made the trip to North Huron for the show and no doubt few left disappointed. (Quinn Talbot photo) Ball park buzzing with three teams Our condolences are extended to the Steffler family on the passing of Tanner Steffler. He will be missed by his parents John and Heather and siblings Davis and Charlee and grandparents Joe and Lin Steffler. Our sympathies to the Alce family and all extended family and friends. Our sympathies are extended to Mike and Teresa deJong on the passing of brother Frank deJong. He will be missed by his many brothers and sisters. Our condolences to all. The Walton Ball Park has started its season with three teams playing regularly. Monday nights has a co- ed team playing at 9 p.m. and Tuesday evening is the Walton Brewers Fastball team playing at 8 p.m. Thursday nights is ladies slopitch at 7 p.m. It is great to see the park being used regularly! There will be some painting done to freshen the park up before the IPM. Everyone has to do their part to beautify the village of Walton! Congratulations to Chris and Erin Blake on the birth of a new son. Lucas George has arrived to the delight of his parents and big brothers Foster and Mason. Happy grandparents are Clara Blake and Dennis and Marilyn Beuerman. Neil and Marie McGavin had an enjoyable weekend in Guelph where Neil celebrated his 60th anniversary of graduating from the University of Guelph. The graduates enjoyed a dinner and delightful time catching up. The Walton Hall was the venue for a brush -up on safe food handling for those involved with the preparing of lunches for the match. Convenor Anne Bosman arranged for a member of the Health Unit to come and speak with a good crowd of nearly 40. Those involved will be making sandwiches and lunch for the plowmen during the International Plowing Match this September. The Knight Open was held on the weekend at the home of Steve and Marni Knight. The men's day has the men golfing, playing outside games and enjoying a barbecued meal. A great time for the 29 or so men to catch up with one another. Congratulations to Ryan Jacklin on winning three gold medals at the Legion District C Track and Field competition on the weekend. Listen carefully and you can almost hear the corn growing. The hot weather on the weekend has made a remarkable difference in the corn growing at least double or triple what it was. When I heard the men talking and they said about hearing the corn grow, I thought how silly, but I heard it again from some others and thought ok, maybe they can. No matter, it is good news and with a drink of water, they are sure it will catch up and be knee high by July! Everything could use some moisture as the ground, fields, flowerbeds are very dry. Even the grass is turning a little brown in places. All the crops need a little rain, the optimum word there is a little, but we shall enjoy the sun and heat while we have it. The hay season has begun with lots of farmers getting the first cut of hay off and then spreading manure. Just finished planting, then some spraying, then hay, manure, then more spraying of crops. It seems the work goes on and on. John and Karen Braecker travelled to Thunder Bay to attend the graduation ceremony of their daughter Holly earlier this month. Holly has finished her schooling from Lakehead University and graduated with her nursing degree as a registered nurse. She has returned to this area to look for a job. Congratulations and good luck to Holly! Take note, that the IPM beautification contest, must have the registration form, cheque and before -and -after pictures in by June 30. There are seven categories to chose from and brochures can be found around at area businesses. You can go online at www.plowingmatch.org/ipm2017 for more information. The barn quilts many have seen popping up on barns are also part of the beautification committee's mandate. Look for information about the barn quilts on the website. June 30 is also the time frame to register these. No computer? Contact Deb Falconer at 519-233-5393. The IPM headquarters at Walton Hall is now staffed and opened for business. Drop in during the day for information on the many happenings of the 2017 Match just 100 days away! The Walton Raceway held a practice day on Saturday and a Amateur Motocross Ontario race on Sunday. They had a great turnout of just under 500 entries and racers. A hot and dusty day for all. They had riders from eastern Ontario, northern Ontario and several U.S. states to hopefully qualify for the Walton Transcan. Congratulations to Adam Braecker and Roxanne Murray who were married at the farm of Bruno and Joyce Braecker on Saturday. Adam is the son of John and Karen Braecker. The dinner and reception were held at the farm of John and Karen, and it was a beautifully hot and windy day for the nuptials. The rehearsal party was also held at John and Karen's. The newlyweds reside at the Braecker farm on Hullett-McKillop Road. Congrats to all!
